  • The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.


    Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.


    This position, reporting to the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, oversees the district's Physical Education, Health, and Student Wellness programs. Responsibilities include supervising and evaluating program activities, leading teacher recruitment and selection, and assisting in orientation and evaluation processes. The role involves managing department budgets, requisitioning supplies, and ensuring effective inventory control. Additionally, it focuses on developing and implementing curriculum objectives, fostering school-community relations, and enhancing student achievement through best practices and professional learning activities. Collaborating with principals, guidance counselors, and other departments is essential for curriculum development, vertical alignment, and effective transitioning across schools. The role also includes organizing department meetings, contributing to schedule planning, attending professional development conferences, and handling substitute teacher assignments. The Executive Director may assign other duties.

    RIDE Requirements:

    • Rhode Island District Level Administrator Certificate – Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator and the following: 

    • RI Health, Physical Education, or Adaptive Physical Education Certification

    • Master’s Degree or higher preferred

    • Coursework in organization and administration of Physical Education and Health programs

    • At least five years of successful teaching experience

    • ESL Preferred

    • Bilingual or Multilingual preferred

    • Right to Read Awareness within one year of hire

    • Supervise and evaluate the full range of physical education, health, and student wellness responsibilities.

    • Provide leadership in recruiting, selecting, and assigning teachers within the department.

    • Participate in the hiring process for the discipline and assist in new teacher orientation and induction as needed.

    • Support principals in the evaluation process for all PK–12 physical education and health teachers using prescribed evaluation procedures, as requested by principals.

    • Foster strong school-to-community relations, keeping the community aware of and responsive to the district’s wellness instructional program.

    • Prepare and administer department budgets in consultation with principalstransformation officers, and the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

    • Requisition supplies in cooperation with appropriate department staff members.

    • Oversee supplies and materials using effective inventory, distribution, and collection techniques.

    • Make recommendations to the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction regarding department vision and programming.

    • Lead the development and implementation of departmental curriculum objectives.

    • Develop and implement professional learning activities for department members in collaboration with the Director of Professional Learning.

    • Facilitate an ongoing cycle of curriculum development and evaluation, relying on data to inform decisions related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

    • Serve as a primary resource for curriculum-specific questions.

    • Oversee school-to-school transitioning, vertical alignment, and course selection.

    • Implement a variety of best practices to ensure student achievement and engagement.

    • Conduct PE/Health meetings regularly as outlined in the annual district calendar.

    • Provide input to the principals/assistant principals on developing each school's PE/Health schedule.

    • Collaboration with District Social Emotional Learning leaders. 

    • Attend curriculum and other professional conferences to inform professional practice and continued growth.

    • Collaborate with the Office of Special Population and the Office of Multi-Language Learners to develop and implement system-wide curriculum objectives.

    • Develop and implement curriculum objectives based on the learning standards of the current curriculum frameworks.

    • Work collaboratively with Transformation Officers and school Principals to align physical education and health programs with broader school performance and student achievement objectives.

    • Update the District Health and Wellness Committee on curriculum and instruction initiatives and changes. 

    • Regularly observe physical education and health classes across the district, providing actionable feedback to teachers and staff to enhance curriculum and instructional quality and student engagement.

    • Utilize data analysis to drive continuous improvement in physical education and health programs, ensuring alignment with district goals and state standards.

    • Skilled in navigating difficult conversations with stakeholders, managing conflicts effectively while maintaining a focus on student well-being and program integrity.

    • Adept at reporting program developments, challenges, and achievements both up to district leadership and down to program staff, facilitating transparent and effective communication.

    • Combine big-picture strategic planning with meticulous attention to detail in program implementation and communication, ensuring high-quality physical education and health education initiatives.

    • Achievement Focus: Sets challenging goals, demonstrates persistence, and overcomes obstacles to achieve goals.

    • Equity: Exhibits a commitment to equity and creates a sense of urgency to close achievement gaps.

    • Other duties as assigned by The Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
