Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the psychiatric unit. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and psychiatric staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of psychiatric patient clinical records, and writes reports on psychiatric staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Primary Responsibilities

    • Dispenses central pharmacy in conjunction with and at the time of the client's visit, and monitors all of central pharmacy transactions to a degree of 100% accuracy.
    • Triages current clients who are having problems or questions regarding prescribed medication and maintains 100% accurate documentation of client contacts.
    • Provides accurate and complete verbal and written instructions for all medications prescribed by the psychiatrist during the client's visit.
    • Receives and manages telephone orders from the psychiatrist and calls them in to the pharmacy as per the psychiatrist's orders.
    • Provides services in the client's natural environment if needed.
    • Maintains awareness of indigent care medication programs from various drug companies and assists clients in application for those programs.
    • Assesses all requests for emergency appointments and facilitates scheduling with the appropriate psychiatrist.
    • Conducts educational and therapeutic group sessions.
    • Contributes to the development and maintenance of treatment plans.
    • Determines appropriate disposition on monthly not-seen client lists and carries out that disposition within 90 days.
    • Trains other TCN staff for monitoring client self-administration of medication.
    • Meets or exceeds standards pertaining to services provided.
    • Meets or exceeds standards pertaining to documentation.
    • Develops and maintains quality, accurate clinical charts for all clients served.

    Education, Certifications, and/or Experience

    • Degree(s) required by the State of Ohio to qualify for nursing licensure.
    • Registered Nurse
    • One or two years in behavioral health care field
    • Well organized, proficient with typing and computer skills
    • Eligibility for private insurance paneling is a plus
    • CPR/First Aid Certifications, De-escalation - TCN will provide upon hire

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Assists with and coordinates all services done by the contract psychiatrists, and contributes to the daily operation and productivity of the Psychiatric Services unit.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Dispenses central pharmacyin conjunction with and at the time of the client's visit, and monitors all of central pharmacy transactions to a degree of 100% accuracy.

    2. Maintains current tracking systems for injections, medication box, and treatment plans.

    3. Triages current clients who are having problems or questions regarding prescribed medication and maintains 100% accurate documentation of client contacts.

    4. Provides accurate and complete verbal and written instructions for all medications prescribed by the psychiatrist during the client's visit.

    5. Receives and manages telephone orders from the psychiatrist and calls them in to the pharmacy as per the psychiatrist's orders.

    6. Provides services in the client's natural environment if needed.

    7. Maintains awareness of indigent care medication programs from various drug companies and assists clients in application for those programs.

    8. Assesses all requests for emergency appointments and facilitates scheduling with the appropriate psychiatrist.

    9. Conducts educational and therapeutic group sessions.

    10. Contributes to the development and maintenance of treatment plans.

    11. Determines appropriate disposition on monthly not-seen client lists and carries out that disposition within 90 days.

    12. Trains other TCN staff for monitored client self-administration of medication.

    13. Meets or exceeds standards pertaining to services provided.

    A. Accumulates the required number of billable hours of clinically allocated time based on Agency standards for position and profession.

    B. Has no more than 2 unscheduled absences per quarter.

    14. Meets or exceeds standards pertaining to documentation.

    A. Provides only those services that have been authorized by Utilization Management and provides services within the authorized frequency and duration of services. Requests additional services when initial authorization has been met.

    B. Documentation will provide sufficient reasoning for the type, frequency, and duration of services provided.

    C. Progress Notes and other documentation clearly identifies consumer's input in services by having consumer's and parent's/guardian's (if applicable) signatures when clinically appropriate.

    D. Completes progress notes at the end of each session and turn in within 24 hours of completion.

    15. Develops and maintains quality, accurate clinical charts for all clients served.

    16. Has no unexcused absences from assigned clinical and administrative committee meetings and training.

    17. Maintains license or registration appropriate to profession and appropriate to job requirement, including appropriate amount of continuing education at all times of employment.

    18. Maintains agency-required annual training including, but not limited to, client rights and grievances, safety training, infection control, and others as required by OHMHAS.

    19. Remains free from citations by other providers or by consumers for unethical practice and meets standard for own profession.

    20. Adheres to all organizational and departmental policies, including compliance with all behavioral and ethical expectations.

    21. Participates in at least 6 hours of supervision for every 3-month period or meets the requirements of supervision required by license/registration (whichever is greater).

    22. Other clinical duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Education: Degree(s) required by State of Ohio to qualify for nursing licensure.

    2. Experience: One or two years in behavioral health care field.

    3. Certification: RN; CPR.

    4. Other: Demonstrated competencies in working with severely mentally disabled

    population.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    Knowledge of: Safety rules and procedures, Agency policy and procedures, county area and resources, documentation requirements.

    Skills: Computer literacy, interpersonal skills.

    Abilities: Lifting up to 25 pounds, use of computer keyboard, sitting for periods of time, ability to see, hear, and communicate information clearly, ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions related to persons with disabilities.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Might have routine contact with individuals who exhibit aggressive behaviors. Strict confidentiality is required. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Some travel among TCN sites.
