Head Nurse - Operating Room jobs in Iowa

Head Nurse - Operating Room directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the operating room. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and operating room staff nurses. Being a Head Nurse - Operating Room supervises preparation and maintenance of patient clinical records and writes reports on operating room staff performance and services rendered. Maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Additionally, Head Nurse - Operating Room requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Operating Room manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Operating Room typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

    Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:

    • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness
    • Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations
    • Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings
    • Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes
    • Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses, documents/reports, interventions and patient/family response
    • Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan
    • Develops, coordinates and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care
    • Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff
    • Follows universal precaution

     

    Percent of Time: 100% 

    Schedule:  Monday-Friday, 8 or 10 hours shifts. Weekends/Holidays/Call required.

    Location: Downtown Campus

    Salary: $54,000 to commensurate *this does not include inpatient or shift differential

    Pay Differentials: Shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Premium pay for additional shifts greater than 4 hours. Inpatient differentials up to $5,000 per year

    Required Qualifications:

    • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP) MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
    • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
    • General computer skills are required
    • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire

     

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired
    • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable
    • Knowledge of university policies and procedures is desired
