Head Nurse - Oncology directs nursing service activities for assigned oncology patients. Delegates responsibilities to oncology staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of oncology patient clinical records, and writes reports on oncology staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Oncology maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Oncology requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Oncology manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Oncology typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • Position Summary

    The Oncology Nurse Practitioner is an exempt position that works collaboratively with an oncology physician and other staff; provides care within the scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policy and practice agreements; writes orders and prescriptions when needed; provides comprehensive care  to patients in an inpatient setting; demonstrates a high degree of clinic expertise in working with oncology patients in active treatment; assesses, diagnosis, treats, manages, educates, encourages health promotion and care coordination for oncology patients and their families; demonstrates an advanced level of medical/nursing clinic knowledge; works with administration, nursing and physicians to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and promotes Charleston Oncology’s mission; complies with all federal, state and local laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc.,  laws, health and safety standards, etc., and performs other essential functions when necessary.

    Essential Functions

    1. Conduct comprehensive health history and physical assessment of oncology/hematology patients with acute, chronic and/or potential health problems; establishes medical diagnoses.
    2. Oversees treatment, infusions and supportive care needs; writes specific orders and/or prescriptions within the limits of the practice agreement/scope of practice including chemotherapy.
    3. Provides appropriate direction to clinic staff regarding patient care issues.
    4. Communicates effectively with referring and primary health care providers.
    5. Maintains clinical documentation according to practice guidelines.
    6. Participates in medical oncology/hematology specific clinical quality and research projects; educates patients and families on treatment plans, wellness care, and survivor ship plans.
    7. Communicates effectively with physicians, team members, patients and families and promotes mutual respect and trust.
    8. Follows ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent and unanticipated adverse outcomes; and complies with all federal, state, and local laws to include but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc., laws, health and safety standards.
    9. Performs other essential functions when necessary.

    Qualifications

    Education

    Minimum--Master of Science in Nursing

    Experience

    2 years Oncology experience preferred or 1 year as a nurse practitioner

    Knowledge

    Ability to demonstrate insight into own strengths, limitations and knowledge deficits; ability to demonstrate initiative to meet identified learning needs using multiple resources; ability to actively participate in self=evaluation by seeking and utilizing guidance and constructive feedback in a professional manner; ability to continuously seek opportunities for clinical advancement and knowledge and skill attainment; and ability to participate in research opportunities to advance the care and treatment of patients with cancer; ability to know, understand and comply with all federal, state, and local laws to include but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc., laws, health and safety standards.
