Head Nurse - Obstetrics directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the delivery room and birthing units. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and obstetrics staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of obstetrics patient clinical records, and writes reports on obstetrics room staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Obstetrics maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Obstetrics requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Obstetrics manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Obstetrics typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Provides independent and collaborative primary healthcare and management of care to women before, during and after pregnancy, including care of the newborn, in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with the policies, values, and mission of the organization.
     
    Job Responsibilities
    • Obtains patient history and performs assessment via observation, interview, and examination.
    • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care plans.
    • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
    • Performs appropriate emergency interventions and appropriately consults attending physician regarding complications and emergencies.
    • Provides education/counseling to patient and patient's family with respect to pregnancy, childbirth, care of the newborn, contraception, family planning, and gynecological care.
    • Provides care in the context of promoting age and culture-appropriate informed choices, shared decision making and the right to self-determination.
    Qualifications
    • Master's degree or higher in Nursing required upon hire
    • No experience required
    • APRN - Licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of Kentucky required upon hire AND
    • RN - Licensed as a Registered Nurse. Eligible to practice nursing in the State of Kentucky required upon hire AND
    • Midwife - Certified Nurse-Midwife certification through American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) required upon hire
