Head Nurse - Obstetrics jobs in Arkansas

Head Nurse - Obstetrics directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the delivery room and birthing units. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and obstetrics staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of obstetrics patient clinical records, and writes reports on obstetrics room staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Obstetrics maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Obstetrics requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Obstetrics manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Obstetrics typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     • Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension
    • Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques
    • Prepares equipment and aids Physician during treatment and examination of patient
    • Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient
    • Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or Physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents
    • Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient
    • Monitors labor patient by IV therapy, 02 therapy, apply and interpret fetal monitor, pitocin induction, maintain epidural anesthesia, monitor progress by vaginal exam, instruct and assist in breathing and relaxation, prepare delivery room, and keeping physician informed of labor situation
    • Assists physician during delivery, immediate direct care of infant, monitoring and supporting mother, initiating maternal-fetal bonding
    • Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.  Attends high-risk infants, notifies physicians, arranges for transport if needed
    • Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients
    • Initiates a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by Physician and/or hospital policy including patient and family instruction
    • Makes beds, bathes and feeds patients with assistance of LPN
    • Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities
    • Participates In the conversion of telephone assessments into assessment appointments or admissions
    • Operates radiant warmer, bili-light, isolettes, 02 analyzer, resuscitation equipment, fetal monitor, infusion pump
