HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Engineering Services, HVAC Shop, is seeking a Facilities Mechanic III. This position will be full-time with a primary schedule of 12:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday including weekends and holidays as scheduled for on-call.
Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the repairing, servicing, and maintaining of buildings and electrical, mechanical and plumbing equipment
Inspects, maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and wiring, plumbing fixtures and pipe, heating, air conditioning and ventilating equipment
Repair and maintain plumbing and fixtures (faucets, toilets, showers, sinks, drains and drain lines), plaster traps, grease traps, maintain centrifugal pumps and associated equipment
Repair and maintain autoclave, sterilizing and related equipment
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all equipment
Repair and maintain water heaters and water supply
Additional duties as required
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
Must possess a basic knowledge of plumbing, electricity, maintenance of steam and mechanical equipment
Must have four years of work experience in the listed crafts, including apprenticeship or technical training. At least two years of that experience must be in the same craft.
