HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of HVAC Mechanic in the Facilities Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for cleaning and performing preventative maintenance on HVAC & Refrigeration equipment; performs scheduled inspections of HVAC & Refrigeration equipment; troubleshoots, repairs, installs, and replaces new HVAC & refrigeration equipment; responds to environmental comfort calls, prepares and completes work orders. Scheduled work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm however, the incumbent may be required to work beyond scheduled hours and weekends as required.
- Completing routine preventative maintenance checks on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to determine if essential building/structural equipment such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, air conditioning, etc. is operating correctly and within required specifications
- Conducting scheduled inspections. Troubleshoots and makes repairs. Installs and replaces HVAC and refrigeration equipment
- Performing routine administrative duties such as: preparing and completing work orders and other paperwork; performing data entry and programming on electronic equipment; purchasing materials and parts; submitting completed work orders and quotes; and contacting vendors for parts and equipment pricing/delivery
- Assisting to troubleshoot, develop, and build test equipment, as assigned
- Performing other related duties as assigned
**City of Richmond Public Works employees who work in this class are considered essential personnel and will be required to work during declared emergencies and major weather events.**MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED
- One year of vocational/technical training in HVAC systems/refrigeration
- Two years of HVAC experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- Journeyman's HVAC Certification is preferred
- Valid chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) certification from the Environmental Protection Agency
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire
