Government Affairs Representative supports the implementation of strategic plans and engagement objectives to develop and maintain productive relations with all levels of government authorities to achieve business goals. Liaises with government entities (federal, state, provincial, or local) that regulate or influence business activities. Being a Government Affairs Representative collaborates with industry groups and organizations with complementary objectives to achieve objectives. Monitors and analyses proposed legislation, emerging issues, and trends and prepare reports and informational documents to inform and support business leaders. Additionally, Government Affairs Representative requires a bachelor's degree in public policy, public administration, business or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Government Affairs Representative work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.     Role and Responsibilities

    SEMCOG (EOE) is seeking an outgoing and experienced Government Affairs Specialist II to join the Government Affairs team. Reporting to the Manager, the Government Affairs Specialist II will assist in and support the development of non-partisan or bipartisan policy consensus on timely and sensitive topics, as well as decisions regarding implementation of those policies. Reviews state and federal legislative and regulatory activity and evaluates its possible impact on SEMCOG members. Works with lobbyists and partners to positively impact policy issues. Supports SEMCOG External Affairs staff in developing resources, policies, strategies, goals, and objectives that advance local government operations, finance, and legislative advocacy in Southeast Michigan.

    The successful candidate will understand local government operations, legislative processes, and current laws on a wide range of issues impacting local governments; well-developed organization and time management skills; be detailed, self-motivated, and capable of working on multiple tasks; excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to interact with a range of external stakeholders and facilitate discussions to build consensus. Attends virtual and in-person meetings with members and partners regarding legislative and policy issues. Delivers presentations and engages in public speaking on behalf of SEMCOG’s Government Affairs department. Responds to questions and comments from SEMCOG members and the media.

    Experience and Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public or Business Administration, Communications, Political Science, or related field.
    • At least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in local government administration, legislative staff, or related/applicable experience.
    • Ability to identify key policies, proposed changes to legislation, and compile large groups of data to show simple results.
    • Effective written, verbal, public speaking, and presentation skills required, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Support and promote a strong internal culture based on SEMCOG core values and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

    Total Compensation Estimate = $128,659 (assumes midpoint of salary range and family enrollment in medical, dental, and vision insurances)
