    Position Description:

    The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Development. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia. The successful candidate will need to exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve the developmental goals. The Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Development position will assist the Chair in fostering an environment that values and promotes faculty development, serving as the chief departmental advocate for investment and improvement in these efforts.


    Responsibilities for this position include:


    • Develop evaluation processes and metrics for faculty development and leadership programs to ensure efficacy and continuous improvement

    • Leverage existing, and develop new, resources for mentoring, leadership, team building, and professionalism among faculty

    • Advise the Chair on identifying faculty development priorities, funding needs, and infrastructure supportAct as a goal champion regarding faculty and staff wellness, engagement, recruitment, and retention

    • Meet individually with faculty regarding mentorship and career guidance

    • Address faculty professionalism issues in collaboration with Department Chair and relevant other Vice Chairs and institutional offices supporting professionalism

    • Interact with the other Vice Chairs and departmental leadership individually and through the Community of Faculty to ensure collaboration and effective communication across missions

    • Build effective mentor-mentee and peer-to-peer mentoring relationships

    • Assist VC Education with supervision/mentoring of faculty members pursuing the American Board of Anesthesiology Alternative Entry Pathway (AEP)

    • Inform, educate, and inspire faculty and staff to achieve their goals

    • Develop ongoing leadership training for Division Chiefs and other department leaders

    • With the assistance of division chiefs, oversee the process of promotion and tenure for faculty, which involves providing guidance and mentorship to faculty at different stages in their career

    • Oversee Early Career Faculty Mentorship Program


    Education Requirement:

    • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree

    • Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology

    Required Qualifications:

    • Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa

    • Demonstrated interest, commitment, and leadership in education with excellent communication skills

    • Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce/academic environment

    Certifications:

    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

    • Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent)

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Prior experience as a leader in faculty development

    • Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in any of the anesthesiology subspecialty areas
