Government Affairs Director implements strategic plans and oversees engagement objectives to develop and maintain productive relations with all levels of government authorities that will support and enhance the businesses' goals. Manages teams that build relationships and liaise with government entities(federal, state, provincial, or local) that regulate or influence business activities. Being a Government Affairs Director performs ongoing monitoring and analysis of proposed legislation, emerging issues, and trends to determine the potential impact on the organization. Collaborates with industry groups and organizations with complementary objectives to achieve objectives. Additionally, Government Affairs Director creates communication vehicles and delivers messaging to inform and support business leaders. Requires a bachelor's degree in public policy, public administration, business or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Government Affairs Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Government Affairs Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Responsibilities:

    • Consistently endeavor to achieve the Chamber’s Vision, Mission, and Values.
    • Monitor and stay informed about legislative actions and public issues at the local, state, and federal level that impact the business community.
    • Advocate and lobby on behalf of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and its members to influence public policy decisions in a manner that supports economic growth and business development.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and key stakeholders in order to effectively communicate and advance the Chambers policy goals.
    • Research, analyze, and provide strategic guidance on legislative proposals and other policy goals.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for governments officials seeking input and feedback from the Chamber on relevant issues.
    • Collaborate with the Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, committees, and members to develop and implement a comprehensive public policy agenda that aligns with the needs of the business community.
    • Prepare and deliver testimony at public hearings, committee meetings, and for other key issues affecting the Chamber’s membership.
    • Engage with local governments, state legislators, federal elected officials and promote the Chamber’s objectives.
    • Educate Chamber members and business leaders about public policy issues that impact their businesses through regular updates, newsletters, and events.
    • Lead the Chamber’s Upstate Chamber Coalition, which is a business advocacy coalition composed of Upstate chambers of commerce and collaborate with other business advocacy organizations to amplify the Chambers influence and effectiveness.
    • Stay abreast of industry needs, best practices, and emerging issues related to government affairs and public policy.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 7 years in government affairs, public policy, or legislative advocacy.
    • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal government processes and procedures.
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence key stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated history of successful advocacy and legislative accomplishments, with tangible results in influencing policy outcomes and May advancing the interests of the business community.
    • Ability to analyze complex policy issues, research, and present information in a clear and concise manner.
    • Strategic thinker with the ability to implement comprehensive advocacy strategies.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build effective relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with online advocacy tools and platforms.
    • Flexibility: Ability to attend evening meetings and events as needed, as well as willingness to engage in some travel for advocacy purposes.
