    Job Summary

    The Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences (EGCS) is seeking a motivated and dynamic geoscientist to serve the public and promote geological literacy as the MA State Geologist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Director of the Massachusetts Geological Survey (MGS). This calendar year, lecturer position is located on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences (EGCS).

    The mission of the State Geologist/Director is to perform research on the land, mineral, and water resources of the state; coordinate and facilitate research, communication, and collaboration among various agencies, researchers, and stakeholders; collect, compile, analyze, and preserve data pertaining to the geologic environment; share research with the public through maps, reports, and other publications; and collaborate with federal and other state geological surveys, and academic institutions.

    Opportunities exist for collaborations with a diverse set of centers linked directly to EGCS including the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (NE CASC), the School of Earth and Sustainability (SES), and the new Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science (CBIKS) The position is authorized under the Massachusetts General Laws (MGL), .

    Essential Functions

    • Serves the diverse needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth, state government, industry, consulting community, and public by providing Earth science information and research that is relevant to natural resources, environmental quality, economic vitality, and public safety.
    • Provides leadership, vision, and management of the Massachusetts Geological Survey and serves as a partner in interagency State and National applications of geoscience data to address societal needs through public facing communication.
    • Works cooperatively with other New England State Geological Surveys, Colleges and Universities, State and Federal Agencies, Municipalities, and Professional Organizations to meet the geoscience information and mapping needs of the Commonwealth and the public.
    • Supports graduate research, applied geologic mapping through university partnerships and non-traditional interdisciplinary approaches, and works collectively to promote teamwork, equality, and inclusiveness.
    • Provides training and mentorship for graduate and undergraduate students funded by the Office of the State Geologist and Massachusetts Geological Survey.
    • The State Geologist may also choose to teach occasional courses or seminars in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences.

    Other Functions

    • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
    • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities.
    • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Master's degree in geology, Earth, or physical science.
    • Substantive prior experience involving technical analysis and interpretation of geologic and environmental data, project management, and staff supervision.
    • Experience managing large and small scientific project workflows, defining expectations, establishing measurable goals, establishing priorities, and coordinating activities.
    • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of geology or of a specialized field within geology.
    • Knowledge of field and laboratory techniques used in geologic investigations, geologic mapping techniques and use of geographic information systems.
    • Awareness of the principles and practices of physics, chemistry, and biology; and awareness of supervisory principles and practices.
    • Ability to analyze and evaluate technical data; manage effectively both large and small projects and budgets; speak effectively in public; present technical data in a clear, concise manner; establish program goals and objectives; communicate effectively in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and prepare and deliver public presentations and legislative testimony.
    • Ability to provide leadership in maintaining professional and collaborative relationships and a positive, respectful, and productive work environment.
    • Ability to structure activities that will promote and foster a diverse workforce and a discrimination/harassment-free workplace.

    Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Ph.D. degree in a directly relevant field of study including Earth, geological, and physical sciences.

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    • Work may involve some exposure to danger of injury or physical harm from conducting onsite field work and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year-round weather conditions.
    • May work beyond normal business hours to meet deadlines and critical objectives.
    • Primarily work in an office or remote setting with extensive use of a computer but with ample opportunities for field work.

    Additional Details

    • Work will require in-state and out-of-state travel and possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

    Work Schedule

    • This is a 12-month, calendar-year lecturer appointment with anticipated start date of September 2024.
    • Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.

    Salary Information

    • Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.
