    WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Geologist for our Madison, WI office.  The following locations will also be considered: Lakewood, CO.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

    In this role you will provide high level technical assistance and guidance for the collection, identification, compiling, and analysis of geological data from various media (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air/vapor). Plans and executes subsurface investigation projects, due diligence projects, and other environmental investigations. Leads the design and permitting Class I underground injection wells . Assists project leadership with environmental site assessment, corrective strategies, classification of contaminated materials, and treatment, disposal, and/or onsite remediation activities.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

    Your Impact

    • Lead the feasibility evaluation, design, and permitting for underground storage well.
    • Provide guidance with data collection efforts for extracting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from soil sampling, soil gas sampling, groundwater sampling, stormwater sampling, boring logs, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys. 
    • Prepare more complex data and visualizations such as mineral charts, soil analyses, groundwater modeling, maps geologic cross-sections, and other illustrations.
    • Ensure regulatory requirement compliance pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
    • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, remedy, or clean-up chemical and environmental problems and contamination.
    • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret geologic, hydrogeologic, and chemical data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level threat mitigation activities.
    • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
    • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
    • Develop action plans for mid to larger-scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control project and programs.
    • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work.
    • Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
    • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
    • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

    Who You Are

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline.
    • 7 to 10 years of experience working as a Geologist. 
    • Proficient with geological research, investigation, technology, measurement tools, software, and techniques.
    • Proficiency with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., and mitigation programs.
    • Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
    • Experience sampling soil and groundwater via drilling including direct-push, hollow-stem auger, and other similar drilling methods.
    • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
    • Experience installing groundwater monitoring wells, remediation wells, and soil gas wells. 
    • Experience writing groundwater monitoring reports and well installation reports.
    • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
    • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
    • Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
    • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
    • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.
    • Effective at coordinating and assertively directing others in the field such as subcontracted drillers, excavation contractors, utility locators, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
    • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
    • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
    • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master’s Degree is preferred.
    • Essential professional licensure/certification.
    • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
