Geologist researches the formation, dissolution, and content of rock layers. Researches the effects of internal pressures, heat, water, pollution, and erosion. Being a Geologist studies variations in rock formations and densities to identify new mineral deposits. Estimates depth, quality and vastness of deposits. Additionally, Geologist tests mineral quality and purity to determine feasibility of mining. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     Collects, analyzes and interprets geologic data and engineering information to develop reserve and coal quality models upon which mine planning is based.

    Job Description:

    Essential Duties:
    • Interpret geologic data and provide reserve and coal quality information and assessments.
    • Assist in the preparation of mine plans and permits in compliance with applicable laws.
    • Monitor state and federal drilling permit requirements and protection of reserves.
    • Supervise contractors during geologic drilling and other related projects.
    • Collect and analyze geotechnical data.
    • Maintain geologic files, data and samples.
    • Complete special technical studies as assigned.
    • Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, state and federal regulations, established company policies and procedures, and employment law regulations.
    Other Duties:
    • Assist with other teams on various mining-related projects.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Some travel will be required.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledgeable in sedimentary and coal geology, geochemistry and hydrology.
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCad (Carlson training preferred).
    • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills required.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work in a team environment.
    • Good problem-solving skills.
    Education, Training and Experience:

    Education and/or experience in geology or engineering. Preference given to those with or in pursuit of a four-year college degree in a related field.
