    • Determine the impacts of prospecting, exploration, development, and mining on public lands through the application of geologic principles.
    • Examine and assess public land for the potential of mineral presence to support management activities.
    • Contribute geologic information input on interdisciplinary teams to support environmental impact studies on public lands
    • Examines BLM land and makes assessment of mineral potential in order to develop, evaluate, and administer minerals management activities
    • Communicates with agency personnel, permittees, applicants, company representatives, and interest groups regarding agency related minerals or geologic topics.
    • Inspect mineral operations for compliance with operating plans in accordance with agency standards.
    • Apply geologic principles to the administration of mineral leasing activities on public lands.

    Specialized Experience for the GS-07 Geologist: one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in geology-related work OR one (1) year of progressively higher-level graduate education.

    Specialized Experience for the GS-09 Geologist: one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in geology-related work. At this level, geologists independently perform recurring assignments that are more difficult and complex than those performed by a recent graduate. Examples: review and provide geologic expertise in the processing of applications to conduct drilling; review mineral exploration proposals and recommend stipulations to protect resource values; provide geologic data to staff engaged in drainage and economic evaluation; OR two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first year of may be combined with experience.

    Specialized Experience for the GS-11 Geologist: one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in geology-related work. At this level, work assignments require the geologist to determine approaches and solutions, using judgment in modifying, adapting and making compromises within standard guidelines, applying standard scientific practices to new situations, and relating the work to precedents. Completed work is reviewed for technical soundness and conformance to requirements and objectives of the assignment; OR three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years may be combined with experience.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics; physics; chemistry; biological science; structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering; computer science; planetary geology; comparative planetology; geophysics; meteorology; hydrology; oceanography; physical geography; marine geology; and cartography.
