Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.
The WVURC receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities and is responsible for helping protect intellectual property through patents, copyrights and licensing agreements for start-up companies based on University research.
