Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice.   • SUMMARY:

    The Academic Counselor shall be responsible to the Director of Enrollment Services/the Director of Student Services for the guidance functions of the college as indicated in the responsibilities listed below.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • None

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Executes all duties assigned by the Director of Enrollment Services on the Wesson Campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
    2. Assists in planning and developing the guidance program and the curriculum in relation to the needs of the students.
    3. Provides academic and career counseling services.
    4. Collects educational and career opportunities information and disseminate such data to the students.
    5. Assists students in advising, planning, and course scheduling.
    6. Counsels students who are wishing to withdraw from school.
    7. Assists with dropping and adding classes for students.
    8. Assists with orientation, pre-registration, and registration of students.
    9. Assists with on-campus and off-campus recruitment of students.
    10. Assists in the summer pre-registration program for incoming freshmen.
    11. Coordinates the campus's dual enrollment program.
    12. Serve on committees as appointed.
    13. Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master’s degree in counseling, student services, or a closely related field.
    • Two (2) years of work experience in a professional setting.
    • Knowledge of effective customer service techniques and relationship-building skills;
    • Skills: Office computer skills; Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.
    • Abilities: Ability to maintain concise counseling records/files; Ability to work with diverse populations; Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.

    ENVIRONMENT AND DEMANDS:

    • The work environment is an office setting with moderate noise.
    • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
