Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. SUMMARY
Provides a comprehensive program related to the social and emotional development of school students. This position is funded by and serves the requirements of the SSP ESSER program at the school for which it is awarded.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Implement a school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National model in the areas of academic, college and career, and social-emotional development.
Conduct counseling evaluations with students suspected of having emotional/behavior problems.
Develop treatment plans to guide students toward reaching goals and monitoring progress, and making treatment adjustments when necessary. Refer students to outside resources as needed.
Counsel students individually and in small groups. Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified short-term needs of individuals and groups of students.
Maintain appropriate confidential records for students.
Review counseling sessions and plan of action with the school leader and district supervisor.
Provide feedback and consultation to parents/guardians and staff regarding student counseling activities.
Adhere to state and District mandating reporting requirements as they pertain to safety concerns.
Provide school counseling core curriculum lessons, parent/family education programs, assist families with school-related problems and issues, and make information available to families.
Provide training for staff on Conflict Prevention and Intervention or other strategies, and assist school staff in effectively addressing problem areas.
Demonstrate the use of evidence informed practices in their interventions.
Attend at least quarterly meetings with the School Safety Assessment and Prevention Team (SSAPT) to review multiple sources of data and discuss/review goals.
Consult and collaborate with other school professionals such as school psychologists, school social workers, and school nurses, in addition to community agencies.
Demonstrate a commitment to the values and ethics of the individuals professional code of ethics.
Attend required program training and conduct required program activities, including implementation of social emotional learning strategies.
Performs other duties that may be assigned.
Requirements:
Holds a valid Arizona Standard School Counselor certificate
-OR-
Holds a valid, comparable School counselor certificate, in good standing with that other state.
-OR-
A Masters Degree (required) or more advanced degree in - IN - Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology from an accredited institution or the completion of a Board-approved school counselor program. Official transcript(s) required. -AND- ONE of the following
Completion of at least six (6) semester hours of practicum in Counseling in a school setting completed through an accredited institution.
-OR-
Completion of one year of full-time experience as a counselor in a setting which primarily serves students in preschool through grade 12.
-AND-
1-3 years of counseling experience or the equivalent, providing the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and implement meaningful and effective guidance and counseling activities.
Excellent skills in project planning and in coordinating multiple short- and long-term projects.
Possession of - or ability to attain - a valid IVP Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
