Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Perform scientific techniques or research
protocols. Assist the Principal
Investigator in designing and performing protocols. Design and perform
experiments. Collect and log research data. Participate in implementing research
objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol
guidelines. Assist
other lab members with experiments as required. May mentor research assistants and
students.
With the assistance of the mentor, find and write research grants with the goal of obtaining additional
research grant funding. Responsibilities may also include coordinating
correspondence with applicants and grantees, acknowledging receipts of
proposals, and maintaining a system to track proposals.
Evaluate and perform
preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight
the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the
research protocols as stipulated.
Prepare and present
presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific
and academic conferences. Summarize
and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly,
peer-reviewed journals. Write
scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check,
proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory
equipment as required. Order and organize required research
supplies and records. Maintain
cleanliness and organization of work station.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
The laboratory of James Granneman at Wayne State University School of Medicine has positions available for postdoctoral fellows in the area of metabolic disease research. Research will be conducted in the new Integrative Bioscience Center (https://ibio.wayne.edu/), which contains state of-the-art facilities and a highly collaborative research environment. Two NIH-funded research programs are currently being pursued: 1) Analysis of lipolytic protein trafficking. This project uses novel pharmacological, genetic, and biophysical tools to investigate evolutionarily-conserved mechanism of lipolysis in adipose tissue, muscle, liver and cancer cells (Cell Rep Methods. 2023 Jan 25;3(2):100394; Nat Commun. 2022 Jul 8;13(1):3956; Cell Metabolism 22:852, 2015; J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 363:367, 2017). 2) Analysis of cellular plasticity in adipose tissues. This project uses genetic tracing, histology, and single cell functional genomics to address mechanism of cellular plasticity and function in adipose tissues (Elife. 2022 Jul 18;11:e80167; Cell Metabolism 28:300, 2018; FASEB J 29:286, 2015;) Successful applicant will have experience and interest in metabolic disease research with laboratory experience in one or more areas that include: cell biology, molecular biology, adipose tissue biology, pharmacology, and quantitative imaging. Job duties will include the following: • Participate in the design and execution of experiments • Interpret biological data and communicate results in the form of papers and presentations • Participate in the scientific activities of the Center for Integrative Metabolic and Endocrine Research (CIMER), including data and journal clubs • Supervise assigned technicians and mentor students • Seek and apply for external funding • Other lab duties assigned.
