Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. A TYPICAL DAY
As a Counselor, you engage in a multifaceted role, offering vital clinical services to a diverse outpatient population comprising adults, adolescents, and children dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring health issues. Your responsibilities encompass a spectrum of interventions, from initial assessments and intake processes to personalized treatment planning and therapeutic interventions like individual, group, and play therapy sessions.
