Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. TITLE: Guidance Counselor
LOCATION: Benton Harbor High School
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal
JOB SUMMARY: Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assisting students in social, physiological, and educational development; counseling groups of students with a focus on understanding and accepting self; assisting in developing more positive ways of dealing with students; informing parents of counseling and guidance services; researching test results for assistance in class placement; assisting ninth grade students and their parents in developing a four year plan; and assisting students in making career decisions by providing college or career information, processing applications, etc. Developing the master schedule and course catalog, and ensuring all students have appropriate schedules and transcripts.
