    Work Schedule: 25-27 hours per week Mon-Fri between 8:00am-5:00pm, Limited Term

    NATURE OF WORK
    As a member of the town’s IT Division, the GIS Intern will perform a variety of administrative and technical support duties such as:
    • Learning and exploring all aspects of the GIS Division including updating spatial databases, reading and interpreting site and subdivision plans or documents, and updating attribute information in tabular databases.
    • Assists with the maintenance and development of Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS), including asset inventories, and land records.
    • Creates maps and data for town staff, Departments, and special projects.  
    • Use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to collect utility, address, and other infrastructure data.
    • Collect and enter raw data into the GIS for town infrastructure using various methods.  Manage data and related data structures within various data constructs including Enterprise Geodatabases, Excel, CSV, DWG, etc.
    • Creates and maintains metadata for District’s GIS layers and documents GIS procedures.
    • Assists with the creation of applications using ArcGIS Online/Enterprise technology.
    • Create and modify models and/or scripts to automate GIS-related workflows
    • Follow QA/QC procedures to verify and update existing data. 
    • Use AutoCAD to view engineering drawings to get detailed information to use for GIS data entry.
    • Analyze legal descriptions for right-of-way, easements, and other surveyed property and maps them utilizing the Public Land Survey System COGO (coordinate geometry). 
    Individuals in this position will provide exceptional, service-focused, reliable customer service and communication in handling service requests, incidents, and changes. Individuals will work under the general supervision of the GIS Supervisor and in collaboration with the GIS and IT Division Team Members. This temporary employment may be scheduled through the year on a full-time basis depending on the needs of the town but will not exceed six months in length (or 1,040 hours, whichever comes first). This is strictly temporary employment.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED
    Individuals work under the direct supervision of the GIS Supervisor to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.  Individuals coordinate with other GIS staff as needed for various projects.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    The Individual in the GIS Intern role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices.     • Assist customers in solving computer-related problems; find alternative solutions if problems cannot be resolved.
    • Provide analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of end-user problems.   
    • Recommend and implement corrective solutions, and perform necessary changes and/or updates.
    • Prioritize and coordinate work with coworkers and with other departments to ensure the timely completion of work.
    • Collaborate with and help support other GIS Team Members with workload.
    • Manage service requests, incidents, knowledge base, assets, and configuration items.
    • Document GIS and related procedures and solutions.
    • Manage priorities, deadlines, and deliverables of assigned GIS projects or changes.  
    • Communicate project and change status, progress, and issues to GIS Manager, GIS Team, and other stakeholders.
    • Build cyber security knowledge for self, team, and end users.
    • Commit to personal and professional growth and support team growth opportunities.
    • Maintain updated skill sets, in line with industry best practices.
    OTHER DUTIES
    Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
    • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
    • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town. 
    • Be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
    • Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Recent graduate of or current student in, a four-year college program with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related program
    • Familiarity with mapping and database software packages, including ESRI’s ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, Collector for ArcGIS, and related tools such as Geodatabases.
    • Familiarity with GPS data collection, GIS standards, terms, principles, and mapping
    • Familiarity with Python programming language and associated programming tools is desirable
    • Familiarity with Pix4D image processing software desirable
    • Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
    LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
    • Must have a current Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire, that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards
    • FAA Part 107 UAS license is desirable

    • Ability to develop and manage the service relationship with customers.
    • Ability to manage multiple assignments within established deadlines.
    • Knowledge of basic geodetic principles and understanding of projections and coordinate systems
    • Knowledge of data constructs and principles of relational database systems as they apply to GIS systems
    • Knowledge of the theory, principles, trends, and/or practices of technology management and cybersecurity, and their application to public sector service delivery.
    • Knowledge of Windows operating system environment and associated network constructs specifically as they relate to GIS technology 
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of hardware configuration, network operating systems, email systems, and relational database structures; basic understanding of various programming languages used with current computer technology.

    • Equipment:  Position requires the use of a variety of equipment: GIS, computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, telephones.


    WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

    The physical activities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: climbing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, sitting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. 

    The physical requirements of this position are considered Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects

    The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

    The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions (protection from weather, but not necessarily temperature changes.) but may occasionally be exposed to outside conditions in the course of regular activities. 

    The employee is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

    This position is not considered safety sensitive because the individual does not operate a commercial motor vehicle, as a regular function of his/her daily job duties.
