Capability Manager I
Basic Function
In this role, the Capability Manager, I will serve as the Principal Investigator, technical task lead, or subject matter expert on technical projects in their area of discipline (microbiology, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or immunology).
The Capability Manager I position reports to the Senior Director, Associate Director, or Assistant Director of the applicable Business Unit. In this role, they collaborate with Business Development, Program Managers, and other key Business Unit members to understand scope, budget, and timelines for both proposals and project execution. The Capability Manager I plans and manages the activities of a Capability consisting of technical staff members, laboratory facilities, and assists for conducting quality research and development.
Nature and Scope
This position requires both technical and managerial skills. This role requires technical expertise in microbiology, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or immunology. Employees in this role are expected to be leaders of both their capability staff, and their project technical staff.
This is an in-person position based at the MRIGlobal Kansas City, MO Headquarters
Essential Functions
- Manages the resources (staff, equipment, laboratory space) associated with a Capability. Provides input for the annual budget and tracks performance metrics to meet established budgets for personal and staff utilization, laboratory expenses, and asset maintenance. Engage technical staff for appropriate project assignments and review/approves weekly staff timesheets.
- Serves as Principal Investigator, technical task lead, or subject matter expert on technical projects in their area of discipline. Provides leadership, mentorship, and guidance for staff during technical task execution. Ensures high quality standards are met during all aspects of project execution.
- Drives scientific innovation and training needed for technical staff to support key initiatives and shape the future scientific direction for the Capability Team. Utilizes team budget for technical diversification initiative projects aligned with Business Development priority focus areas.
- Collaborates with Business Unit Directors and Program Managers providing input on proposed project scopes of work to determine feasibility within proposed cost, schedule, resources, and performance constraints. Gives feedback to proposals' potential for success and the investments required.
- Responsible for technical deliverable output of Capability Team's staff. Takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies. Provides a safe work environment for each staff member by ensuring that safe working procedures exist, and practices are enforced.
- Assists in development of technical procedures within Research Operations and the Business Unit to ensure adherence to standards of ethical business conduct and technical work requirements.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
- Evaluates capability team members' performance accurately and fairly. Communicates and discusses performance on a regular basis. Gives staff constructive feedback and encourages a culture of open communication. Prepares performance appraisals.
- Approves the selection of all new hires for the capability team. Works with Senior Director, Associate Director, or Assistant Director of the applicable Business Unit in defining staffing needs, selection/assessment criteria, and hiring strategy for research staff.
- Identifies key development needs for staff and works with other line managers to mentor staff and provide appropriate training and assignments in core competency areas.
- Recommends training needs of staff to improve performance and assist in career advancement. Establishes and executes a formal training program to ensure professional development and staff engagement within the capability team.
- Leads scientific impact initiatives for staff publications, participation at technical meetings and key contributor recognition.

- Knowledge of legal regulations such as EEO, government contracting standards (i.e., level of effort time allocation, GFE asset management), environmental protection, and MRIGlobal policy.
- Proficient PC skills and the ability/willingness to learn new software and systems.
- Sensitivity to personal and confidential information.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. In order to meet the government security investigation requirements, U.S. citizenship is a requirement.
- Ability to travel as needed (0 to 10%).
Minimum Qualifications
Advanced degree in a technical related field (microbiology, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or immunology) plus a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; B.S./B.A. in a technical related field (biology, chemistry, and other applied sciences) plus a minimum of 7 years relevant experience; or appropriate combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in a technical related field (microbiology, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or immunology) plus a minimum of 6 years relevant experience; B.S./B.A. in a technical related field (microbiology, molecular biology, in vitro diagnostics or immunology) plus a minimum of 9 years relevant experience; or appropriate combination of education and experience.
