    The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) in conjunction with the Division of Watershed Stewardship and Waterway Management Section has an opening for a Conservation Technician II in Lewes, Delaware. The selected candidate will be primarily part of our waterway crew responsible for channel and basin dredging, dredge and vessel maintenance, algae harvesting, channel marking and removal of hazards to vessel navigation. Additional duties will be to assist with beach maintenance operations, the sand by-pass plant and to assist with yard and building maintenance.

    Job Duties:

    • Participate in and may supervise subordinate or less experienced technicians during the performance of duties including dredging, vessel operation, installation and removal of dredge pipeline, channel marking, algae harvesting, transport of equipment, beach grading and dune fencing, general equipment maintenance.
    • Perform basic equipment maintenance such as greasing and filter and belt replacement.
    • Use hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, drills, and chainsaws.
    • Participate in staff meetings and training classes.
    • 37.5-hour Schedule: 6am to 4:00pm Monday – Wednesday, Thursday 6:00a.m.-3:30, Friday-off.
    • Evaluate staff performance and work with the program manager to provide solutions to issues.
    • Meet with the program manager and other Conservation Technicians to discuss project planning, goals, progress, and issues.
    • Participate in meetings with property owners, representatives from municipalities and legislative representatives.
    • Investigates complaints regarding waterway and beach related issues such as channel markers, algae harvesting and dune crossings.
    • Perform and may direct staff in basic equipment maintenance such as greasing and filter and belt replacements.
    • Transport materials and equipment
    • May direct staff and participate in the use of hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, drills, and chainsaws.

    Job Experience:

    1. Six months experience in operating hand power tools and land-based and/or marine-based construction equipment used for grading, excavating, pumping, or dredging.

    2. Six months experience in routine maintenance of land and marine construction equipment, light trucks and vessels.

    3. Knowledge of waterway management operations such as macro-algae harvesting, navigational channel marking and/or abandon vessel/derelict structure removal.

    4. Knowledge of site construction standards and methods to support land and marine activities.

    5. Possession of a valid CDL Class A OR B Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

    6. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DNREC does not provide sponsorship for holders of H-1B Visas.

    Benefits:

    The Kent Conservation District offers a comprehensive benefits package including: 37.5 hours work week and flexible scheduling options: 15 paid vacation days the first year; 9 paid holidays a year; and 15 paid sick days per year. Pension and health insurance are also included in the benefits package. Direct Deposit of paychecks will be required as a condition of employment for new employees.
