    Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ (ALCC) Mission

    It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to "lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well being.

    The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.

    Indian Youth Service Corps Mission :

    The Indian Youth Service Corps (IYSC) is a new Department of Interior (DOI) program within the Public Land Corps initiative to provide opportunities for Native American youth to engage in public service, perform meaningful conservation projects on federal and Tribal lands, and stimulate interest in conservation-related careers.

    The IYSC is designed to be a collaborative program that provides shared benefits to program participants, tribes, federal and tribal land partners, and to the general public.

    The Historic Preservation Training Center’s Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) is excited to offer an IYSC component to its program to provide indigenous youth quality hands-on experience in the preservation and maintenance of historic resources of cultural importance to indigenous peoples on National Park Service sites.

    National Park Service Mission :

    Our Mission The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

    The National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) at Pecos National Historic Park.

    Members will receive introductory training in preservation masonry and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources.

    This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

    NPS - Pecos National Historic Park (NHP) Overview

    The Resources Management Division at PECO is tasked with historic resource stewardship and conservation of these significant park resources.

    The important cultural and historic resources at Pecos NHP are constantly under threat from natural and human caused impacts.

    Interns will receive introductory training in preservation masonry (stone and adobe), making adobe bricks, applying mud plaster and preserving earthen architecture.

    They will develop an understanding of resource stewardship that will help preserve our nation’s important cultural resources.

    The interns' work will directly contribute to the preservation of a National Historic Landmark, called the Pecos Pueblo and Mission, which is also the primary resource the park was established to protect.

    Other projects will help preserve historic resources that contribute to the parks significance.

    ALCC Pecos National Historic Park - Traditional Trades Advancement Program Individual Placements (IP) Overview :

    The goals of the outlined projects are to inspire youth to embrace the ethos of public lands conservation and stewardship.

    It also serves the National Park Service's long-term goals of expanding opportunities to underserved communities to better connect youth with ancestral lands now managed by the NPS.

    The work experiences, mentorship, educational and recreational opportunities will strengthen and deepen connections between the service members, Pecos NHP, and public lands that are culturally important to traditional Native American communities surrounding the monument.

    These projects will inspire the next generation of historic preservation workers and supervisors that can serve the NPS and their local communities where many of the most important historic sites and structures in New Mexico are found.

    Interns will assist with preservation maintenance of the primary ruins at Pecos NHP. Work will include mixing and making adobe bricks, mortar and plaster;

    building adobe walls and brick veneers that protect historic adobe walls, mud plastering adobe walls, repairing adobe walls by repointing mortar joints, crack stitching, and building and maintain brick and mortar caps on the top of walls.

    Stone masonry work will consist of resetting stones in mud mortar and repointing mortar joints. Some work may be carried out on scaffolding if needed.

    Intern will also assist archaeologists in the documentation or preservation work using photography, photo logs, notes, and forms.

    Interns will also be trained in hands-on historic preservation techniques and materials and monitoring and documentation methods.

    In addition, they will be trained in work safety and orientated to NPS management and philosophy.

    This internship position will work with archaeologists and preservation masons on the Historic Preservation Crew to preserve Ancestral Pueblo sites and the stone masonry and earthen architecture of the Pecos Pueblo and Spanish Colonial Mission at Pecos National Historical Park.

    This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career fields within the NPS as well as the private sector.

    Essential functions and responsibilities :

    The intern will have masonry focused projects that include : dry stone masonry, wet stone masonry, stone shaping, and plastering.

    General maintenance on the monument grounds will also be include in the project duties outlined.

    Preserve and Repair the Earthen Architecture of the Pecos Spanish Colonial Mission Church and Convento : This project will address deferred maintenance on the Pecos Mission Church and Convento, which dates from 1625-1838.

    The site represents one of the oldest and largest missions in the northern southwest.

    a. Essential functions and responsibilities :

    i. Preparing mortar mixtures

    ii. Making adobe / mud bricks using forms

    iii. Replastering mud caps and resetting adobe masonry

    iv. Replacing deteriorated mud plaster surfaces

    v. Building new brick veneers that protect original walls.

    vi Repointing masonry joints with new mud mortar

    vii. Drain repair and contouring to improve drainage

    viii. Room backfill to protect subsurface deposits

    viv. Site Documentation

    Stabilization of the South Pueblo Site : This project will repair and stabilize the stone masonry remnants of the Pecos Pueblo South portion also called the South Pueblo.

    i. Preparing mortar mixtures

    ii. Removal of historic stabilization mortars

    iii. Resetting loose cap and mid-wall masonry

    iv. Replacing or resetting deteriorated masonry

    v. Drain repair and contouring to improve drainage

    vi. Room backfill to protect subsurface deposits

    vii. Site Documentation

    Installation of Erosion Control at Bartlett Log Cabin

    a. Essential functions and responsibilities :

    i. Remove old erosion waddles

    ii. Install new erosion waddles according to plan

    iii. Place jute matting where needed

    iv. Site Documentation, showing completed placements

    Required Skills

    Minimum requirements :

    • MUST have a valid drivers license
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen
    • Must pass required background checks
    • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
    • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including, lifting, or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
    • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces, and / or be able to work in confined spaces.
    • Ability to work 8-10 hour days in various conditions
    • Ability to hike rough, uneven terrain
    • Ability to work with power tools and hand tools
    • Attention to Safety
    • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
