Welding Worker Training Leader

  • Duties

    • On a regular and recurring basis leads 3 or more advanced Welding students in the performance of on and off site related projects.
    • Instructs and demonstrates basic and advanced welding processes using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes for techniques such as Metal Arc (MIG) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG).
    • Instructs processes for proper planning and layout out of work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal, and processes for maintaining temperature to prevent distortion.
    • Instruction in the use of templates, jigs, blueprints and symbols for welders and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment.
    • Instructs proper methods of setting up welding equipment, adjustment for amperage, gas flow, preventative maintenance, electrodes selection based on joint requirements, metal identification, and safety.
    • Instruction in processes that include pre-heating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating.
    • Instruction for proper selection of type of rod and size of tip to accomplish weld, maintaining proper speed, flame, motion, tip angle and position to produce desired results.
    • Implements a flexible on-the-job and classroom training instruction program, utilizing specific Welding TAR (training achievement record) competencies and on-the-job training to instruct students ages 16 through 24.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.     The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
