    Description

    The Food Services Supervisor is responsible for the management of all aspects of the Kitchen inclusive of staff supervision and quality food preparation, service, and food storage. The Food Services Supervisor will assist the Health Services component of Head Start & Children’s Services in coordinating, implementing, monitoring and evaluation high quality nutrition and food services at a local Head Start & Children’s Services program.
     
    The Food Services Supervisoris responsible for promoting the mission of ABCD Head Start & Children’s Services; building an understanding of the program by communicating this mission to staff, families and the community.
     
    This position must comply with all federal, state and local laws, regulations, standards and policies, including those of the federal Administration for Children and Families (ACF), the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Massachusetts disability law (Chapter 766), Boston Family Engagement Network (BFEN) and ABCD, Inc. Head Start and Children’s Services policies and procedures. 
     
    All ABCD Head Start/Early Head Start and Children’s Services personnel who are paid to care for, or work with, children are MANDATED BY LAW to report all suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF), pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 119 §§ 51A – 51G.  Any staff member who suspects child abuse or neglect of a child must inform his or her supervisor immediately.
     
    The responsibilities of a particular position may support both Early Head Start and Head Start depending on the individual assignment. The specific corresponding funding allocation will be documented on the personnel payroll authorization or change of status form.
     
    All communications are potentially sensitive and are subject to Head Start's policy on confidentiality.


    Key Responsibilities

    Specialized Food and Nutrition Services (80%)
    ·        Coordinate the implementation of the cycle menu in accordance with ABCD policies, procedures, and established practices; budget requirements; Head Start Performance Standards, and the guidelines established by CACFP.
    ·        Maintain weekly food inventory system for ordering of food and supplies. 
    ·        Ensure weekly ordering of food and supplies needed for meals and snacks served on site and for field trips, and where applicable, for other program activities from appropriate vendors.
    ·        Ensure that all incoming food orders and supplies are of the proper quantity and quality at time of delivery. Report any problems to the Food Administrator and/or the Health Services Coordinator.
    ·        Develop the daily/weekly schedule of kitchen staff in accordance with the Head Start schedule.
    ·        Ensure and supervises the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals and snacks at scheduled meal times for all children, including any special diets at the center.
    ·        Ensure documentation of any changes and/or substitutions to the menu on a daily and/or weekly basis. 
    ·        Ensure meals for children with food allergies and other special dietary needs are prepared in accordance to the child’s meal plan and in regard to food safety practices.
    ·        Maintain all required CACFP paperwork including menu production records, menu changes and cultural meals, temperature logs, inventories, cycle menus, and food purchase receipts. 
    ·        Submit required documentation monthly to central staff.
    ·        Ensure proper storage of food, supplies and equipment. 
    ·        Ensure maintenance of kitchen, food service utensils, equipment, and food storage areas to standards mandated by Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and best practices with regards to food safety and sanitation.
    ·        Develop and test recipes and products. 
    ·        Cooperate and participate in nutrition education activities for children, parents and staff.
    Utilize Information and Technical Systems (Up to 20%)
    ·        Responsible for the effective documentation and tracking of training activities and requirements.
    ·        Maintain statistical data as requested by the ABCD Head Start administration and in accordance with federal and state regulations.
    ·        Monitor and track follow-up needs and concerns for the programs.
    Additional Job Responsibilities (Up to 10%)
    ·        Assist with administrative needs as requested. 
    ·        Attend and participate in required community activities, meetings, trainings on and off site, some during evening hours.
    ·        Engage in ongoing staff development to expand professional skills. 
    ·        Performs any other related duties as assigned from time to time. 


    Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

    ·        Demonstrate a knowledge of and sensitivity to the educational and socioeconomic needs of those served.
    ·        Ability to deal with sensitive situations in a non-threatening and professional manner.
    ·        Knowledge of neighborhoods served by the program and services relevant to the programs’ population. 
    ·        Excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills.
    ·        Successful experience in working as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
    ·        Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and to use community resources effectively. 
    ·        Keyboarding skills, computer literacy and familiarity with various applications such as database, word processing, e-mail and internet.
    ·        Proven ability to keep accurate written records and documentation.
    ·        Possess bilingual ability where appropriate.  Translates as necessary or when needed.
    ·        Ability to maintain knowledge of all federal, state, city and program laws, regulations, standards and policies.
    Professionalism
    ·        Engage in ongoing staff development to expand professional skills.
    ·        Maintain professional boundaries in relationships with staff and families.
    ·        Maintain confidentiality of child and family information at all times.
    Physical Environmental Demands & Conditions
    ·        Must have the capability to engage in the physical activities of the job responsibilities listed above, including without limitation, the capability to lift and move heavy objects such as food for storage, preparation and cleaning.
    ·        Must have good personal hygiene, including a clean body, clean clothes and clean habits.
    ·        Must be free of communicable diseases and have a yearly physical and Tuberculin screening.
    ·        Must be able to lift heavy items and work under less than adequate conditions such as high temperatures.
    ·        Possible travel for program needs and on and off-site trainings.
    ·        Lift items based on program administration needs.
    ·        Must be able to work independently without intensive supervision.
    ·        Must be able to balance and prioritize workload and have strong time management skills.
     
    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
    Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent, as well as Food Protection Manager Certification, with proof of course work in management or food services and 1 to 3 years of experience in quality food production required.  Experience in supervision of food service staff. Experience in working with nutritional needs and the specialty food requirements of the child between the ages of 0 and 5.
