Food Services Manager oversees the daily operations of the organization's food service function. Monitors inventory levels and purchases food, kitchen equipment, and other supplies as needed. Being a Food Services Manager provides related training and supervises service staff. Establishes quality standards for foods and maintains cleanliness of the facilities in accordance with state or local regulations. Additionally, Food Services Manager may require an associate degree or its equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Food Services Manager supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Food Services Manager typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Thorough knowledge of functional area and department processes.     JOB GOAL:

    To assist the manager in directing a small to large staff of employees engaged in the preparation and serving of a variety of quality meals in a Food and Nutrition Services establishment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School Diploma or approved equivalency diploma.
    • Serv-Safe Certification (or receive within 6 months)
    • Must pass a physical exam.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of the planning, preparation and service of a large variety of foods. Knowledge of the uses of a variety of food service equipment. Knowledge of food values and nutrition. Knowledge of health, sanitary and safety practices in the food service operation. Knowledge of the storage of food and non-food supplies. Ability to supervise the preparation of economical, nutritious and attractive meals. Ability to supervise and train food service personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with manager, employees, students, and school personnel. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to market the School Lunch program to students, parents, school administration, and community. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize activities. Ability to effectively use all food service computer software applications. Ability to collaborate, plan, implement programs, and problem solve with the manager.

    SUPERVISES:

    Food Service Workers

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist manager with interviewing applicants and making recommendations for employment
    • Assist manager with the training of new personnel
    • Plan, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates through daily work and cleaning schedules
    • Supervise and assist in the preparation and service of approved meal and a la carte offerings as required
    • Supervise the packaging and transport of lunches for assigned satellite feeding programs
    • Supervise care, maintenance, and use of equipment
    • Assist manager with orders and requisitions
    • Receive food and non-food shipments to cafeteria in accordance with centrally approved practices
    • Assist manager with requisition of needed repair and maintenance work
    • Assist manager with implementation and maintaining standards pertaining to sanitation and safety, personal hygiene and dress, and the handling / storage of food and other supplies
    • Bank monies collected from approved meal services
    • Interact with parents, outside agencies, business and community to enhance understanding of district initiatives and priorities and to elicit support and assistance
    • Keep immediate supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events
    • Maintain a network of peer contacts through professional organizations
    • Represent the district in a positive and professional manner
    • Work closely with food service manager, district and schools staffs to support school improvement initiatives and processes
    • Provide leadership and direction for assigned areas of responsibility
    • Assist the manager in facilitating the development, implementation and evaluation of staff development activities in assigned areas. This includes recommendation for termination
    • Attend training sessions, conferences and workshops to keep abreast of current practices, programs and legal issues
    • Assist manager in preparation of all required reports and maintain all appropriate records
    • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action
    • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

    • Stand for up to six (6) continuous hours
    • Stoop, squat, kneel, and/or bend in a manner that allows the palms to touch the floor (as in cleaning baseboards, equipment, etc.)
    • Bend from a standing position in a manner that allows the palms to touch the knees (as in washing of pots and pans in deep sinks, and cleaning milk boxes)
    • Bend from the waist in a standing position with the arms outstretched for an extended period of time (as in the service of food)
    • Twist, turn, and/or stretch from side to side that allows the shoulders to be perpendicular to the hips (as in sweeping, mopping, stocking shelves removing food from ovens)
    • Lift, carry, and/or support 30 pounds from shoulder level to above head (as in placing food in ovens, freezer, stockroom shelves etc.)
    • Work with caustic and non-caustic chemicals
    • Work in hot, humid environment
    • Perform duties requiring repetitive motions with hands and wrist (as in slicing, dicing, washing, counting money, writing, scrubbing, scraping, etc.)

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
