Fire Inspector conducts inspections of new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with fire and safety codes. Prepares reports and issues violation documents. Being a Fire Inspector documents and defines actions needed to resolve non-compliance situations. Conducts fire investigations. Additionally, Fire Inspector has extensive knowledge of codes, ordinances, construction materials, and alarm systems. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science or equivalent. Has completed fire inspection training and may require the Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI) credential and applicable State License. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Fire Inspector is capable of working on complex problems and exceptions without direct supervision. Has a wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of the job. We are currently seeking a full-time Fire Inspector for our Antioch contract to work Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm (hours may fluctuate to meet inspection needs).
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThis civilian position performs a variety of routine and complex work in the interpretation and enforcement of adopted codes and related rules and regulations regarding commercial fire inspections. Inspects properties to verify compliance with adopted Fire and other codes. Performs necessary Plan Reviews. The position reports directly to Fire Chief or designee.
• Conducts fire inspections of existing commercial/industrial structures, multi-family common areas, for compliance with adopted fire codes, resolves compliance problems with owners within the employee's scope of knowledge and authority.• Responds to complaints and documents field conditions and/or violations of fire and other codes, communicates inspection results to property owners, tenants, businesses, etc.• Maintains a variety of logs and records related to inspection and enforcement activities, including computer data entry of inspection results• Issues warnings and citations for fire code violations.• Researches fire code requirements in adopted District ordinances, NFPA, ICC and related documents when necessary.Antioch Fire Department and the First Fire Protection DistrictPolicies and Procedures Page 2• Makes suggestions for amendments and additions to codes or regulations, which relate to the position.• Assists in obtaining, preparing and presenting exhibits, reports, or other evidence in court as required.• Operates and properly maintains all tools and equipment needed to perform the essential job functions and responsibilities listed above while adhering to all District-wide and departmental safety rules and practices.• Reviews and approves all plans relating to Fire Codes and Life Safety Codes within the Fire District.• Provides a monthly activity report to the Fire Chief• Perform related work as required or assigned by the Fire Chief or his designee
• WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF:
•The International Fire Code and Life Safety Code • Fire prevention inspection principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting. • Applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to various public safety codes. • Inspection techniques
• Prepare, organize and maintain inspection files, field data, reports and systems.• Work well with the public, local business owners, tenants and to be able to act effectively in stressful situations.• Analyze complex situations, problems and data and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions.• Comprehend and articulate complex facts and relationships in detail and summarize and write clearly, concisely and legibly and testify in court in an objective, concise and professional manner.• Produce or obtain reports, graphs, charts, and/or photographs for evidence or exhibits.• Follow verbal and written instructions.• Respond to and interact with customer, employees and others within and outside the organization in a courteous and professional manner.• Ability to use the following tools: District vehicle, tape measure, cell phone, 2-way radio, ladder, flashlight, hard hat, computer, microfilm, copy machine, fax machine, telephone and digital camera
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES:• Two or more years of college coursework, preferably in Fire Science, Code Enforcement, Building Inspection or related field is preferred.• Two or more years’ experience in fire prevention inspections, plan review or related field preferred• Experience with Microsoft Office• IL Class D driver's license, or equivalent from another state.• One of the Following: NFPA Fire Inspector I, or NFPA Fire Prevention Officer 1, or the ability to complete coursework/obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:As dictated by the Fire Chief
WORK ATTIRE: Uniform will be provided.
REQUIREMENTS:• Ability to sit at a work station or in meetings for extended periods.• Occasional ability to lift, carry and move parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.• Ability to navigate all terrain on foot for inspections
• Successful completion of pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check
