FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. The Wilton Fire Protection District is a team-oriented organization that consists of 1 staffed fire station, 2 resident volunteer fire stations, 3 full time captains and a combination of volunteer shift firefighters as well as resident volunteer firefighters. The district provides fire suppression and emergency medical assistance to residents located within its 59 -square-mile boundary. Adding volunteer members to our staffing is extremely vital to the success of our district. We rely on their assistance when multiple calls come in or when large incidents occur that require more personnel.

JOB OBJECTIVES:
A person assigned to Fire Captain Classification is trained in fire suppression and emergency medical care and is engaged in the prevention, control, and extinguishment of fires and response to emergency situations where life, property or the environment is at risk. Under the supervision of higher level supervisory and management staff, the Fire Captain operates and maintains fire apparatus and other fire agency equipment; responds to fire alarms and other emergency and non-emergency calls to protect life and property; provides basic life support and medical assistance; and conducts fire prevention inspection and public education programs. The Fire Captain supervises the District’s Firefighters and Fire Engineers at assigned stations and works directly for and in cooperation with the Duty Chief.
