FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Division of Fire Safety Investigators are Missouri POST licensed law enforcement officers stationed throughout the state to assist local fire and law enforcement agencies with fire and explosion investigations.

    Job Description:
    • Direct supervision of Senior Commissioned Investigators
    • Approve weekly reports, schedule and approve leave time for assigned personnel
    • Evaluate the job performance of assigned Senior Commissioned Investigators and discuss their performance with the individual and the Deputy Chief of Investigations.
    • Respond to scene of major investigations when requested by the Deputy Chief or State Fire Marshal
    • Supervise major investigations, including but not limited to: coordination of the overall investigation; supervision of personnel; serve as a liaison between the Division of Fire Safety and other agencies; and assign other personnel as needed.
    • Lead or assist in multi-agency investigation which relates to fire, explosion, and related crimes.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to respond for any assigned investigation within the State of Missouri on a 24 hour basis.
    • Knowledge of sources of information to be utilized in obtaining evidence and documentation, and the principles of identification, preservation, and presentation of evidence.
    • Knowledge of practices and techniques used for law enforcement work.
    • Knowledge and skills to perform the work overseen.
    • Ability to assign and evaluate work of staff.
    • Excellent public relation & oral and written communication skills.
    Qualifications:
    Applicants for this position must meet the following statutory (320.210) and certification requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.
    • A minimum of five (5) years in some phase of fire prevention, fire investigation or criminal investigation which may include service with a state, municipal, military, or industrial fire protection engineering. An equivalent degree, which is determined by the State Fire Marshal, from a recognized college or university may satisfy all or part of this requirement.
    • Successful completion of a specialized training course on fire and arson detection and investigation, by a recognized, certified and accredited institution.
    • Must be certified as a police officer with the POST Commission with the Department of Public Safety in the State of Missouri.
    • Must hold current certification as a Fire Investigator with the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.
    • Must be capable of obtaining Missouri Division of Fire Safety Certification as a Fire Service Instructor I within one year of employment.

    Additional Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Must be a Missouri resident and possess a valid Missouri motor vehicle operator’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle upon employment.
    • Must be at least twenty-five (25) years of age.
    • Persons appointed to this position shall be subject to calls twenty-four (24) hours a day.
    • Shall be of good moral character
    • Shall not have been convicted or pleaded guilty to a felony or other charge involving a moral crime, child/elder endangerment or abuse.
    • Shall be a citizen of the United States and shall have been a tax paying resident of the state of Missouri for at least three years immediately preceding appointment.
    • Shall possess ordinary physical strength and be able to pass such physical and mental examinations as the State Fire Marshal may prescribe.
    • Must reside within one hour of the Jefferson City Division office.
