FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education. Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Experience. Nine (9) years total certified law enforcement experience. Must have held the rank of Lieutenant for a minimum of two (2) years. In addition to having successfully passed a First Line Supervisory course, must have an additional 40 hours of supervisory training with 24 of those hours in mid-level, administrative or management training.
Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County policy.
Licenses/Certifications. Must have a valid driver’s license with a verified record of good driving history. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County policy. Must have current New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Demonstrates advanced level of practical knowledge of a wide range of technical methods, principles and practices similar to a narrow area of a professional field; and skill in applying this knowledge to such assignments as the design and planning of difficult and well-presented projects.
