FIRE CAPTAIN jobs in Galveston, TX

FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Command vessels in oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, or coastal waters.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIREMENTS

    • US Coast Guard 25 Ton Master License.
    • Steer and operate vessels, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses.
    • Dock or undock vessels, sometimes maneuvering through narrow spaces, such as locks.
    • Adjust navigation according to weather conditions.
    • Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and conformance to regulations.
    • Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure, or oxygen.

    • Judgment and Decision Making Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
    • Active Listening Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

    EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

    Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees and guests.
