Financial Reporting Director directs and oversees the preparation and distribution of all periodic financial statements for external use. Ensures that reports, filings and documentation complies with company's regulations, professional standards, and SEC and GAAP reporting guidelines. Being a Financial Reporting Director confirms that entries, transactions, and accounts are accurately and properly consolidated and are included in internal and external financial statements. Advises management of trends and changes in reporting requirements and recommends best approach for any changes in reporting. Additionally, Financial Reporting Director may serve as a liaison with or oversee the work of external auditors. May direct the preparation of materials for board or shareholders. Requires a bachelor's degree of Accounting or Finance. Typically reports to top management. The Financial Reporting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Financial Reporting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Unit Mission Statement
    Financial Reporting is responsible for the university’s Consolidated Financial Statements including component units. Reconciliation of general ledger accounts and review of journal entries prior to entry into the university’s Enterprise Resource Planning system Banner. This responsibility includes ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data and meeting the reporting needs of the university

    Position Summary
    Reporting directly to the Director of Financial Reporting, the Assistant Director of Financial Reporting is responsible for the NCAA Schedule and audit, preparation of year end schedules to support the Consolidated Financial Statements, reconciliation of general ledger accounts and accounting system design consistent with generally accepted accounting principles. Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
    • Prepare the NCAA Financial Report and oversee the audit of the NCAA report by the Auditor of Public Accounts (APA).
    • Prepare supporting schedules for the year end financial statements and review Component Unit schedules/footnotes.
    • Research new Governmental Accounting Standards Board pronouncements and develop implementation plan to ensure compliance with the new GASB standard.
    • Approve journal entries ensuring data integrity of the university’s financial data.
    • Manage testing plan for new functionality for ERP.
    • Evaluate and configure processes ensuring sound accounting treatment and compatibility with financial reporting requirements.
    • Coordinating detailed financial research and analysis as requested to support leadership.
    • Maintain data and create reports from QLIK university’s reporting software.
    • Special Projects as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

    Required Qualifications
    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    COMPETENCIES:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), with the demonstrated ability to apply those principles in an operational environment.
    • Substantive professional experience and specialized expertise directly related to the position.
    • Proficiency using a variety of software applications, with demonstrated skills in using an automated financial system.
    • Strong excel skills.
    • Strong analytical skills with a background in financial statement preparation, the ability to extract and analyze complex data.
    • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population and work collaboratively as a team member.


    EXPERIENCE:
    • Proven experience working in an automated accounting and reporting system.
    • Strong substantive experience in financial statement accounting.
    • Professional experience in accounting or financial operations.


    Preferred Qualifications
    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
    • Advanced degree (specifically a Master’s in Finance, Accounting or Business) and/or a CPA license is preferred.


    COMPETENCIES:
    • Strong knowledge of ERP systems.
    • Strong working knowledge of Commonwealth of VA state financial policies & procedures is highly preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:
    • Experience working in an ERP system is highly preferred.
    • Experience working with the commonwealth of VA, specifically in an accounting function within higher education is a plus.

    $83,000-$90,000, commensurate with experience
