Financial Reporting Director directs and oversees the preparation and distribution of all periodic financial statements for external use. Ensures that reports, filings and documentation complies with company's regulations, professional standards, and SEC and GAAP reporting guidelines. Being a Financial Reporting Director confirms that entries, transactions, and accounts are accurately and properly consolidated and are included in internal and external financial statements. Advises management of trends and changes in reporting requirements and recommends best approach for any changes in reporting. Additionally, Financial Reporting Director may serve as a liaison with or oversee the work of external auditors. May direct the preparation of materials for board or shareholders. Requires a bachelor's degree of Accounting or Finance. Typically reports to top management. The Financial Reporting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Associate Director – Financial Reporting

  • Position Overview

    The University of Kansas Office of Research (KUOR) administers externally sponsored research projects on the KU-Lawrence campus and oversees designated research centers and institutes as well as state surveys and a number of smaller research centers and core research service laboratories. Within the Office of Research, the KU Center for Research, Inc. (KUCR) ), a non-profit 501(c) 3 research foundation, is the entity responsible for submitting all proposals for external support of research, instructional and service projects. In addition, KUCR helps research investigators by negotiating contracts, providing proposal and post-award services, administering compliance oversight, managing and constructing research facilities, and handling financial services, including investment of corporation resources.

    The Associate Director will be responsible for preparation and distribution of the corporate financial statements including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities and Cash Flow; maintenance of the corporation’s general ledger, and ensuring that all transactions and documentation complies with GAAP standards. KUCR has an external financial audit and files corporate tax returns. The Associate Director is a key administrator with the external auditors and responsible for the preparation of the corporate tax returns. The Associate Director will perform their duties under the guidance and direction of the Chief Financial Officer for KUCR.

    Job Description

    70% - Corporate Financial Statements
    • Manage the preparation and distribution of internal and external corporate financial statements and reports, maintaining the highest quality, reliability and accuracy.
    • Coordinate, develop and update written policies and procedures over the financial reporting process.
    • Maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting.
    • Research and resolve accounting issues including evaluation and implementation of new accounting pronouncements to ensure US GAAP compliance.
    • Coordinating the collection, consolidation, and evaluation of financial data; preparing special reports.
    • Guides other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy; applying observations and recommendations to operational issues.
    • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.
    • Supervises staff of two financial analysts; set goals for the department and manage distribution of duties for staff.
    • Work directly with the external auditors at year-end. Provide documentation and support for the year-end external audit and financial statements.
    15% - Corporate Tax Return
    • Responsible for financial data and reports collected to provide to external tax accountants to create 990 corporation tax return. Serves as point of contact with the external tax accountants.
    • Files various local, state and federal tax returns for the corporation as applicable
    • Keep up to date with current tax procedures and developments
    10% - International Tax related returns
    • Works with KUCR pre-award, contracts and service agreement teams to identify potential international contracts for KUCR. Responsible to identify international tax issues and works with external consultants to ensure appropriate tax reporting for the corporation.
    5% - Other duties as assigned

    Position Requirements

    This position is remote however, may require incumbent to occasionally come onsite.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or related field and 5 years of related experience OR Master’s degree in Business, Finance or related field and 3 years of related experience.
    • Two years of supervisory experience.
    • Five year’s budget, finance, and/or accounting experience.
    • Minimum of three year financial analysis, modeling and forecasting experience.
    • Minimum of three years preparation of financial statements or corporate tax returns.
    • Experience that required strong technical U.S. GAAP accounting knowledge.
    • Experience working with Microsoft Office Programs, including Word and Excel.
    • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
    • Experience in a multi-tasked environment as evidenced by work history.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • CPA certification and/or MBA preferred.
    • Experience with educational learning environment, as well as the sponsored research within a higher education institution
    • Experience with not-for-profit FASB accounting and financial statements
    • Experience with Oracle Financials in the Cloud (FITC) or Peoplesoft financials
    • Demonstrated experience and familiarity of sponsored research concepts and systems.
    • Demonstrated understanding in financial regulations, laws and standard practice.
    • Experience and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and translate financial concepts and results.
    • Demonstrated ability to negotiate and mediate at all levels, to be sensitive to differing viewpoints, and to be proactive and anticipate as evidenced by application material.
    • Experience navigating changing priorities.
