Financial Reporting Director directs and oversees the preparation and distribution of all periodic financial statements for external use. Ensures that reports, filings and documentation complies with company's regulations, professional standards, and SEC and GAAP reporting guidelines. Being a Financial Reporting Director confirms that entries, transactions, and accounts are accurately and properly consolidated and are included in internal and external financial statements. Advises management of trends and changes in reporting requirements and recommends best approach for any changes in reporting. Additionally, Financial Reporting Director may serve as a liaison with or oversee the work of external auditors. May direct the preparation of materials for board or shareholders. Requires a bachelor's degree of Accounting or Finance. Typically reports to top management. The Financial Reporting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Financial Reporting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • The Pulitzer Center is seeking a candidate to lead its Reporting Fellows program at our Campus Consortium partner universities. 

    Our Campus Consortium includes liberal arts colleges, journalism schools, schools of public health, community colleges, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and state universities. The Pulitzer Center awards annual fellowships to students from each of its more than 40 partner campuses, as well as a limited number of fellowships to post-graduates from some journalism schools and special call fellowships for reporting on different topics. Reporting Fellows report from countries around the world to produce stories related to the Pulitzer Center’s five focus areas: climate and the environment, global health, peace and conflict, human rights including gender and racial equity, and information and artificial intelligence.

    The Reporting Fellow team is part of the University and Community Outreach team and works closely with their colleagues to develop and promote reporting projects by the Fellows and engage with diverse audiences in-person and virtually. The Director of the Reporting Fellows Program heads a team that recruits and selects Reporting Fellows from Campus Consortium partners, organizes the in-person Washington Weekends, and serves as a mentor and guide for Fellows and alums. The individual reports to the Director of University and Community Outreach. This individual will ensure the successful completion of reporting projects while providing a challenging and transformative experience for the Fellows.

    The position is remote/hybrid open to applicants within the US. Preference for applicants located in Washington DC. Some travel will be required.

    Responsibilities

    Develop and sustain the Reporting Fellows program.

    • Manage the Reporting Fellows team and seek opportunities for team members, with the aim of building skills, capacity, and future leadership.
    • Provide overall vision and direction to the Reporting Fellows team for program growth and efficacy.
    • Lead the recruitment of Reporting Fellows from each of our Campus Consortium partners; organize calls for additional fellowships related to critical global issues.
    • Head the selection committee for the Reporting Fellows. Ensure that the Fellows represent diverse voices and report on projects in a professional and ethical manner. Develop and continuously improve criteria and guidelines for the application and selection process.
    • Oversee the virtual orientation for each class of Fellows and ongoing program support including: guidance related to budgeting, time management, pre-reporting, interview techniques, travel, story structure, pitching, and more. 
    • Edit and coordinate the publishing of Reporting Fellow stories, including orchestrating the mentorship of Fellows by professional journalists and facilitating the development of relationships with editors at news outlets.
    • Oversee the development of educational journalism resources on topics ranging from developing multimedia skills to safety protocols and cultural sensitivity.
    • Manage the awards submission process and social media for Reporting Fellow stories and activities.
    • Lead the development of an active Reporting Fellow alum network in-person and virtually and support Reporting Fellow alums as they establish careers in journalism or global affairs
    • Lead the creation and monitoring of the program budget and finance administration in alignment with the finance and senior leadership.
    • Approve legal agreements with partner organizations and vendors as needed.

    Deepen and broaden the impact of the Reporting Fellow journalism by building community among the Fellows, the Pulitzer Center staff, Campus Consortium partners, and journalism networks.

    • Liaise with the Development team and Senior Leadership to prospect donors and develop opportunities to meet the fundraising goals of the program and organization.
    • Liaise with the Communications and Publishing teams to publicize, brand, and promote the Reporting Fellows program across the Pulitzer website and social media channels.
    • Work closely with other Engagement  teams to provide outreach and networking opportunities for Reporting Fellows including webinars, panels with professional journalists, Campus Consortium events, and other events.
    • Collaborate with the Editorial Team to strengthen and enhance the Reporting Fellowship experience.
    • Head the Campus Consortium Advisory Council. Strengthen relationships with Campus partners and faculty. 

    Qualifications

    • A minimum of 8 years journalism experience
    • Strong management and leadership skills, news judgment, and work ethic
    • A passion for global issues and a commitment to the Pulitzer Center mission
    • Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and communication skills
    • Ability to motivate and inspire university students and emerging journalists
    • Open and collaborative management style
    • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills
    • Cross-cultural sensitivity and commitment to centering equity in all aspects of the work
    • Teaching experience at the college level (preferred)
    • Multimedia proficiency a plus

    The Center uses an established compensation philosophy in administering compensation. Offers are determined based on candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.

    Salary range listed above is for US-based employees.
