Field Engineering Manager - Construction supervises on-site technical oversight activities to provide engineering guidance and monitoring for construction projects. Monitors construction progress and conducts daily site inspections to ensure work complies with time, budget, quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. Being a Field Engineering Manager - Construction enforces quality control procedures and inspection protocols to ensure that standards, designs, blueprints, and specifications are understood and followed. Troubleshoots technical issues that arise on-site and consults with architects, contractors, and supervisors to develop and implement solutions with minimal disruption to project schedules. Additionally, Field Engineering Manager - Construction documents construction activities using logs, progress, and inspection reports and regularly updates status to project managers. Procures and coordinates any additional resources required to support field engineering activities. Attends project meetings to provide technical input and recommend improving construction processes. Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering. Typically reports to a manager. The Field Engineering Manager - Construction supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Field Engineering Manager - Construction typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Job Summary

    Coordinate project testing services consistent with client’s needs by either performing or arranging qualified personnel to perform applicable special inspections and testing. Perform field observations/evaluation, provide related recommendations on construction projects, prepare associated reports, and manage project testing for assigned jobs. In conjunction with company leadership, develop a system for recruiting, training, and retaining staff.

    • Coordinate the Scheduling of the Field Projects, Technicians, and Clients on a daily basis.
    • Coordinate with clients and report Field Testing Results as needed.
    • Establish and meet project quality requirements.
    • Assist in maintaining and improving the materials testing laboratory in the local offices.
    • Oversee and maintain client, project team and in-house communication during work performance.
    • Assist in preparing and reviewing formal engineering reports.
    • Communicate with clients to determine their project needs.
    • Develop engineering and testing programs for projects.
    • Establish project budgets and prepare and present proposals.
    • Maintain project file and job status.
    • Prepare invoices and pursue aged accounts.
    • Assist with report preparation and review.
    • Establish, maintain and build business relationships with clients.
    • Pursue specific project leads.
    • Conduct all testing services according to QA procedures.
    • Collaborate with Laboratory Manager to coordinate services and ensure the timeliness and quality of work.
    • Perform special inspection services, materials testing or environmental services on an as needed basis.
    • Review, Sign, and Report Laboratory work.
    • Assist with AASHTO AMRL/CCRL and/or Corps of Engineers Laboratory Accreditations.
    • Perform soil boring layout/documentation, utility clearance meets and surveying.
    • Log/classify soil samples in laboratory or fieldwork, as needed, according to QA procedures.
    • Must meet or exceed AET’s productivity standards.


    Other Areas of Accountability

    • Conduct field, laboratory, and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations and AET’s Health and Safety Policy, and that promotes the safety and protection of employees, clients, and the public.
    • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, procedures and technologies in designated fields.
    • Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Some positions may require use of personal vehicle for company business. Maintain compliance with DOT driver regulations if required for position.
    • Maintain appropriate physicals if required for position.
    • Some travel within regional area, occasional night, weekend, or out of town work.
    • Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment.
    • Coordinate with other staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity, and communication.


    Qualifications and Education Requirements

    • High school diploma or equivalent required, two-year technical degree in a related field is desired.
    • A minimum of 8 years of experience with laboratory and field testing of soils, concrete and asphalt, engineering observations of grading, roadways, and buildings. Consideration will be given to individuals with an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience.
    • Detailed knowledge of principles and practices in more than one specialty area, or demonstrated expert knowledge of principles within a specialty area.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in developing timely, accurate, and detailed project documentation.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in report writing, experience reviewing test results, project management.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel and Word.
    • Demonstrated track record of building and maintaining high levels of client satisfaction, which generates repeat business.
    • ACI concrete Field I certification, ICC masonry preferred, DOT certifications preferred, reinforced concrete preferred.
    • Troxler approved certificate for use of Troxler Field Nuclear Density Gauge preferred.
    • Communication skills sufficient to convey complex technical information in a clear manner to diverse audiences.
    • Ability to interact successfully with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.
    • Ability to perform hand auger borings and field testing throughout the working day strongly preferred.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 30-60 pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 60-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
