  • Thurston County is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individuals for the Equipment Mechanic position within the Fleet Services (ER&R) Division of the Central Services Department. 

    Central Services provides a wide range of professional internal services to County offices and departments including vehicle and equipment fleet management, facilities operations and maintenance, records management, surplus, and mail services. Centralizing these services is an efficient and effective means of delivering service and providing access to internal expertise. The department has 55 employees across eight divisions that support a county workforce of more than 1,200 employees.

    About this position
    This position inspects, diagnoses, and repairs vehicles and all types of equipment used in highway maintenance. 

    Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
    • Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical equipment on passenger vehicles, power shovels, graders, dozers, heavy trucks, loaders, and all other County-owned equipment.
    • Designing and repairing electrical systems.
    • Testing and repairing starting and charging systems.
    • Entering job order data on county provided computer using FIMS software.
    • Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and service manuals.
    • Utilizing a variety of diagnostic software applications and scan tools.
    • Checking bearings, wrist pins, and cylinders for wear.
    • Pulling wheels and replacing or repacking wheel bearings and refacing or replacing drums; replacing brake linings and shoes; repairing air cans and checking systems for leaks.
    • Repairing air compressors, air governors, air brakes, and hydraulic systems.
    • Operating shop equipment such as grinders, boring bars, vacuum gauges, voltage regulator testers, wheel balancers, drill presses, wheel pullers, jacks, air tools, scopes, timing lights, arc welders, oxy and acetylene welding and cutting equipment, and various hand tools and diagnostic testing and other equipment used in automotive repairs.
    • Designing, modifying, and installing hydraulic systems and other special accessories to the equipment on hand.
    • Maintaining shop services records.
    • Road testing vehicles and equipment after repair.
    • May do machinist, welder, or blacksmith work; may do specialized work such as body repair and painting.
    Working Conditions
    Approximately 90% of duties are performed in an automotive shop environment with physical effort exerted while lifting machine parts and tires ranging from 25 to 125 lbs. Physical injury can result from exposure to a variety of automotive and welding fumes and moving parts. Driving is required to move vehicles and equipment as a regular part of daily responsibilities.
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Two years of experience working under the direction of a journey-level mechanic and one year as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing light and/or heavy-duty highway equipment.
    • Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
    • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement, within 6 months from date of hire. 
    • Ability to diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment.
    • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
    • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools used in automotive maintenance work.
    • Ability to weld and fabricate vehicle body repairs and modifications.
    • Current ASE Certification.
    • Formal education beyond high school and trade school is preferred.
    • Knowledge in the areas of troubleshooting and repairing engines, drive train components, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, steering and suspension, heating and air condition, hydraulic, mechanical, and other systems.
    • Ability to identify and recommend new methods of equipment that will improve and enhance a safe working environment, expedite job completion, and provide cost savings. 
    • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, customers, and internal staff.
    • Ability to work as an effective team member.
