    The position of a Family Educational Specialist includes but is not limited to:

    · Providing direct services to children and families in the community of VFSS clients.

    · Partner with the client in utilizing a strengths-based approach to continually assess strengths and problem areas

    for the client and family.

    · Provide education on areas needed to support the client and family in optimal functioning to establish

    reunification and stability.

    · Support clients in addressing areas including mental health, poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, physical

    abuse, social skills, child care, or medical care; however, the Educational Specialist will not provide clinical

    services to clients.

    · Support the client in creating and maintaining positive connections to and interactions with applicable community

    resources and agencies such as the local Department of Social Services and the school system.

    · Provide care coordination through regular communication with referring entities and other professionals involved

    with their clients

    · Be a mandated reporter and will follow all guidelines for abuse and neglect reporting.

    · Maintain case history records and prepare reports.

    · Be supervised by the VFSS Director or an assigned Supervisor.

    Responsibilities

    The Educational Specialists will have knowledge of human behavior, child development, mental health terms, and non-clinical intervention techniques. The Educational Specialist will strive to be culturally competent and view clients and systems with intersectionality; defined as having an awareness of one’s own worldview with the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures. The Educational Specialist will have a working knowledge of how to teach, collaborate with, and relate to individuals and groups of varying races, cultural backgrounds, religions, ages, gender, ability level, and income level.

    Qualifications

    The Educational Specialist will have a master’s degree in a human service field or a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 1-year work or volunteer experience in a related field. The Educational Specialist will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services screening, and supplemental training required by VFSS. The Educational Specialist will be skilled in critical thinking, active listening, service coordination, and time management. The Educational Specialist will have the ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and provide effective and efficient services to clients. The Educational Specialist will be open to furthering their knowledge of topics pertinent to services provided through training.
