    Position: Water Display/Animal Exhibit Maintenance Manager

    SCOPE OF POSITION

    Manages the Life Support staff. Responsible for the general and preventative maintenance and inspection of all Life Support Systems and water quality systems at the Memphis Zoo with primary focus on safety. The position requires a close working relationship and coordination with other members of the Facilities Maintenance Team along with the Animal Care, Animal Health, and Animal Programs departments to provide needed LSS services, water quality and testing services.

    Functions & Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Develops, implements and manages protocols and procedures for zoo-wide life support system functions, operations and associated personnel. Operates, monitors and maintain the associated equipment (pump, chillers, ozone generators, filters, and piping systems) and conducts daily visual inspections and schedules regular maintenance on all systems equipment. Develops, implements and manages protocols and procedures for zoo-wide life support system functions, operations and associated personnel. Writes and tests emergency procedures for LSS. Develops water quality test schedules to ensure clear understandable data for each system. Familiar with regulations for housing marine mammals in terms of the life support system; understands and implement any testing and monitoring parameters required to comply with the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Maintains current records for review by USDA-APHIS inspector upon request. Proactive management regarding maintenance and operation of all LSS equipment; troubleshoot and repair systems and water issues in a timely manner. Participates in exhibit and facility planning, research and design. Interacts and networks in the fields of life support systems and water quality. Within the parameters of overall Zoo policies, designs implements and manages policies regarding supervision of the LSS department (e.g. including plans, assigns and reviews work of LSS Lead and team Maintains, prepares, and submits reports and records regarding LSS on paper, ZIMS, and FMX Remains current on regulations and laws relating to life support and water quality standards and communicate as needed. Ensures LSS compliance with AZA accreditation and USDA requirements, and professional standards including marine mammals, aquatic birds, fish, and invertebrate systems. Frequent coordination and proactive communications with the Animal Care curatorial team.

    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Prepares and conducts performance reviews, provides safety and equipment training and identifies development opportunities for staff, recommends corrective actions when appropriate and interviews/recommends candidates for hire and/or internal promotion or transfer. Assists in the development of and maintain LSS annual budget. Prepares work schedules for LSS personnel. Identifies and secures necessary tools, equipment and supplies required for staff to operate efficiently and effectively. Works with Purchasing to ensure that adequate supplies are on hand at all times using the most cost-effective methods available. Maintains an accurate records system of newly submitted and completed requisition forms and equipment documents. If applicable, monitors and distributes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Safety Data Sheets.

    Ensures safety of self, staff, animals and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Attends daily/weekly meetings as required. Participates in cross-training activities as directed. Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization Acts as Manager on Duty Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Skills & Experience

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

    Ability to troubleshoot complex water treatment and filtration systems in both fresh water and saltwater environments. Experience with advanced water chemistry analysis techniques and mechanical filtration systems. Must have expert knowledge of life support system function, design and construction, water quality testing methods, diver operations, and operation of related equipment. Ability to plan work schedules and to deal effectively with supervisors and subordinates required. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required. Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required. Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required. Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required. Possession of a valid Tn. motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    B.S. in life sciences or 5 years of equivalent experience required 5 years of experience preferred working with Life Support Systems (Ozone Generators), large scale aquariums, HVAC, and general maintenance; extensive knowledge of water quality systems, water chemistry analysis techniques, pool equipment as well as regulatory and membership agencies and regulations (USDA, USFWS, AZA, AALSO). 1-3 years of supervisory experience required. 3-5 years of experience is preferred. 5 years progressive experience at a zoo or public aquarium in the management of aquatic systems.

    Education and/or Training

    Bachelor's degree, preferably in science field with knowledge of complex water quality systems, including ozone generators. Knowledge of AZA and USDA standards of aquatic and non-aquatic species a plus.

    Experience

    Four to five years experience in an aquarium or zoological field with strong emphasis on closed marine systems and water quality testing required, also a strong emphasis on managing team members, and managing daily standard operational procedures(SOP).
