    ORGANIZATION MISSION

    The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the historic Lorraine Motel, honors,
    and preserves the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. We chronicle the American
    civil rights movement and tell the story of the ongoing struggle for human rights.
    We educate and serve as a catalyst to inspire action to create positive social
    change.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Museum Educator is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and academic rigor of
    all Museum messages based on solid historical research. This position serves in the
    capacity of both historian and teacher for the Museum. The Museum Educator works
    closely with the Education Manager, Associate Curator, and the Chief of Education
    and Interpretation. They may also work with other departments and occasionally with
    tour guides and volunteers.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Conducts research to support education programs, exhibitions, publications
    media outreach and training
    • Develops, organizes, and conducts programs for diverse audiences and target
    groups – primarily adult learners
    • Stays abreast of new scholarship in arena of civil and human rights and imparting
    information to staff
    • Presents education programs (for internal & external audiences) in a variety of
    formats: virtually, onsite at the museum, or offsite; and can differentiate the
    program approach, based on the learners age and prior content knowledge
    • Conducts tours for audiences of varying ages and widely ranging amounts of
    pre-existing knowledge on civil and human rights
    • Helps to ensure museum education programs are accessible to all learners
    • Collaborates with Education Manager to establish annual plans and long-range
    goals in accordance with Museum strategic plans and departmental goals
    • Participates in creating and presenting program plans and written materials for

    various target audiences, including for teacher training/professional
    development purposes, this could also include presenting to NCRM Staff

    • Conducts research and creates programming materials related to annual
    Freedom Award and Student Forum events, King Day celebration, Ruby Bridges
    Reading Festival, April 4 Commemoration event, and newly added programs.
    • Identifies potential partner organizations and seek collaborative opportunities
    that align with Museum mission and goals
    • Serves as member of Collections Committee and may be asked to speak with
    other Museum professionals, as needed
    • Maintains detailed expenses records according to approved spending levels
    • Maintains detailed attendance records (for people served via ed. programs)
    • Prepares written reports, correspondence, and grant narratives as required by

    Education Manager, Chief of Education and Interpretation, or Development
    department.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS

    The Museum Educator performs additional functions (essential or otherwise), which may
    be assigned from time to time. The position may require work on weekends, nights, and
    holidays to accommodate facility programming and utilization.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL / SOCIAL REQUIREMENTS


    • Requires the ability to operate general office equipment and move Museum

    exhibits, artifacts, etc. weighing up to 60 lbs.
    • Must exhibit strong people skills and be comfortable interacting with the general

    public as well as being able to collaborate well both inner-departmentally and
    inter-departmentally. Also is strong in collaborating with external partners

    • While most work is performed inside, some outdoor work is required during various
    Museum-related functions, particularly for our annual tent pole events (King Day,
    Ruby Bridges Reading Festival, and the April 4 Commemoration event)


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s degree or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree with minimum two (2) years of
    experience successfully performing responsibilities above); teaching certification,
    Masters in Museum Education, Public History, Southern History, African American
    history or Africana Studies is preferred
    • Should possess extensive knowledge of the civil rights movement and U.S. history,
    and some basic knowledge of the ongoing struggles for human rights
    • Ability to perform tasks using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
    • Has expertise and experience lead engaging educational programing virtually

    (via Zoom or Teams,) in person at the Museum or offsite in schools, libraries and
    community centers for learners of all ages, from diverse backgrounds, and with
    varying amounts of knowledge on the content which the museum interprets

    • Can adjust their teaching style based on learners needs or constructive
    feedback from supervisor or summative evaluations from program participants
    • Can confidently teach to groups or varying sizes (from 2 people-1000 people),
    ranging ages, etc. and uses teaching methods that help make the content
    accessible to all learners, regardless of physical or neurological abilities
    • Ability to develop program from concept to implementation, including project
    team management
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Enjoys working effectively with a wide range of staff, vendors, donors,
    researchers, volunteers and the general public.
    • Ability to work effectively and communicate openly in a team-based
    environment
    • Ability to work in a self-directed capacity, as well as with guided direction
    • Serves as an ambassador for the museum, for teaching hard history, and for
    empowering all learners to be catalysts for positive social change
    • Ability to make sound judgments, multi-task effectively, meet deadlines and
    achieve organizational goals and objectives
    • Must possess a valid State Driver’s license
