Exercise Physiologist develops, implements, and evaluates exercise programs for patients. Conducts testing that assesses cardiovascular and metabolic effects of exercise for cardiac and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Being an Exercise Physiologist follows testing protocols and selects appropriate testing protocol for the patient. Monitors patient during testing. Additionally, Exercise Physiologist calculates and records testing results. Coordinates with cross-functional patient care teams. May design exercise prescriptions, instructional materials, home exercise guidelines, and discharge instructions. Conducts exercise training sessions for patients. Requires a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology. Typically reports to a manager. The Exercise Physiologist work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. UPMC Shadyside Hospital is currently hiring a full-time Senior Clinical Exercise Physiologist to join our team!
The Sr. Clinical Exercise Physiologist works in either or both inpatient and outpatient settings. Reviews patient's charts and medical histories, performs initial assessments, develops treatment plans, administers exercise modalities, evaluates progress, and documents outcomes on patients in order to increase/improve overall functioning through exercise modalities and education. For most inpatients, to offset the detrimental effects of inactivity. Educate on disease states, recovery, smoking cessation and risk factor modifications. Maintains open communications with coworkers, physicians and other dept staff. Coordinates day to day workflow and direct subordinate staff to accomplish the days' work. Develop and present periodic in-services to staff on new or established clinical practice. Provide leadership to subordinate staff by teaching and assisting with orientation and being a resource when needed to clarify and provide judgment for less experienced staff when needed. Assists Department Manager in reviewing policies and procedures, developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives, and helping in many ways to extend the reach and impact of the program.
