International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants, Standard Setter - Senior Manager
  • International Foundation for Ethics and Audit
  • New York, NY FULL_TIME
  • DOES THIS DESCRIBE YOU?

You are a self-motivated and confident individual with experience managing challenging technical projects and engaging with key stakeholders along the way. You can champion the board’s work and are focused on building strong relationships with key stakeholders. You are keenly interested in public interest and practical ethical issues and have the confidence to participate actively in discussions on challenging topics in a collaborative environment. You are an excellent communicator at ease both in navigating a multi-cultural work setting and in liaising with key stakeholders, including regulators and oversight bodies, international policy-making organizations, investor representatives, the corporate governance community, national standard setters, accounting firms, the broad community of assurance practitioners, professional accountancy organizations and academia.

You are a critical thinker and have diversified knowledge to analyze the interactions of technical standards and assess and address the implications of change across ethics and audit- and assurance-related ethics literature. This means the board and your colleagues can look to you for ideas and solutions to novel problems. Your wide-ranging project management experience means you can manage diverse priorities and deliver on multiple projects or assignments.
As a member of the staff of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), you will support our global mission and participate in key projects and initiatives in fulfillment of the IESBA’s strategic commitments. You will work closely with board members in crafting standard-setting solutions to complex or emerging ethical issues and support the IESBA senior technical team members in managing the IESBA’s work program.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

Around the world, businesses, investors, the corporate governance community, regulators, policy makers, standard setters, professional accountancy bodies, accounting firms, assurance practitioners, and other stakeholders are focused on the future of corporate reporting in a rapidly changing world. Major forces are at play: sustainability imperatives; new technologies, changing business methods and service delivery models; challenges of relevance and trust; and public demands for accountability and integrity in the private and public sectors. In this dynamic and uncertain world, the IESBA is focused on setting high-quality ethics (including independence) standards as a cornerstone to public trust in the production, reporting, and assurance of financial and non-financial information that is fundamental to the proper functioning of financial markets and economies worldwide.
Your ability to operate effectively in this role will be predicated on your ability to appreciate the changing context in which professional accountants, and others who perform similar professional activities as professional accountants, operate and the rapidly evolving stakeholder expectations concerning sustainability; to absorb technical concepts underpinning ethical principles; and to synthesize complex variables influencing ethical behavior into creative, cogent proposals that advance high-quality ethics standard-setting and thought leadership.

    YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of a dynamic, collaborative, and multi-cultural team, you will work closely with experienced board members from around the world. You will be responsible for, among other things:
    • Conducting project research, including engaging with stakeholders such as regulators, international and national standard setters, policy makers, investors, governance groups, accounting firms and assurance practitioners, professional accountancy organizations, and academics around the world, as appropriate.
    • Develop standards, guidance, and consultation or thought leadership papers, in partnership with IESBA team members and board members as well as in coordination or collaboration with other standard setters.
    • Participating in discussions of the IESBA, International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB)–IESBA Stakeholder Advisory Council, and IESBA-National Standard Setters (NSS) liaison group, and actioning outcomes of discussions and decisions.
    • Serving as a liaison with key stakeholders and managing aspects of the board’s engagement with them.
    • Supporting outreach activities in coordination with board leadership and the senior technical team.
    • Supporting the production of quarterly reports to the Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB) on the activities of the IESBA.

    YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience in executing complex projects involving seasoned individuals from diverse backgrounds in a public interest-oriented environment.
    • Knowledge of issues relating to ethics and independence – experience in standard-setting is a plus, as is an understanding of the special considerations relating to public interest entities, small- and medium-sized entities, and practices (SMEs/SMPs), and/or public sector entities.
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential – knowledge of another language is desirable.
    • Excellent technical and project management skills, and strong computer literacy.
    • At a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting or other relevant field, e.g., law.

    YOUR PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

    • People-focused, able to work with people at all levels of an organization and across cultures.
    • Able to effectively communicate information to stakeholders and colleagues to gain cooperation.
    • Confident in approaching issues and articulating ideas, views, and proposals, and diplomatic in building consensus among varying perspectives towards solutions development.
    • Detail-oriented, organized, and focused on quality.
    • Flexible, innovative, and proactive; able to handle changing priorities confidently.

    LOCATION AND COMPENSATION
Primary Location (New York City) Salary Range: $150,000 - $195,000
