    Project Overview:
    Located in Southeastern Washington State, on the Hanford reservation, The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

    The WTP project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
    Position Summary

    The Sr Equipment Stress Engineer is a working member of the Equipment Analysis Group designing and analyzing complex mechanical equipment. You will be preparing design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment used in the waste treatment process and support systems.
    The primary role of the Senior Equipment Stress Engineer is to collect the process, mechanical, controls, safety, and other requirements for the process equipment in order to develop highly detailed documents and calculations for the equipment to meet the applicable requirements. The primary products of the Equipment Analysis Group are design calculations validating the suitability of equipment for use on project.
     
    Responsibilities:
    • Perform equipment analyses using CFD or FEA software to produce equipment design calculations, as well as perform reviews of analyses and other submittals prepared by equipment vendors.
    • Resolve technical issues related to the equipment design and discuss them with other disciplines, groups, suppliers and the customer.
    • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines in the development of the design.
    • Support the production of the equipment drawings. This may be performed as an individual contributor or leading other engineers.
    • Prepare reports and studies in resolving open technical issues related to the equipment design.
    • Support development of cost estimates and schedules for mechanical equipment.
    • Ensure work is performed to the project’s quality standards for nuclear facilities while executing to the schedule.
    Qualification – Education:
    • Level 1: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering (or equivalent) with minimum of 9 years of related experience.  MS degree in Engineering (Mechanical or related) preferred.
    • Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering (or equivalent) with minimum of 13 years of related experience.  MS degree in Engineering (Mechanical or related) preferred.
      1. Related experience includes, but is not limited to, the design and fabrication of complex equipment, experience with liquid & gas handling equipment preferred (vessels, tanks, air handling equipment, mixers, etc.
    • Professional Engineering license (preferred).
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards; particularly fabrication and construction of process equipment, including ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.3, AISC ASD, AISC N690, etc.
    • Significant experience using CFD analysis software (such as STAR-CCM and/or ANSYS Fluent).
    • Understanding of fluid dynamics, specifically fluid flow, heat transfer and acoustics.
    • Experience working with procedures employing quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
    • Experience with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software to support structural and thermal analyses. WTP prefers STAR-CCM or ANSYS Fluent.
    • Experience producing equipment design calculations.
    • Experience producing design documents, including specifications and datasheets that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements.
    • Experience using ANSYS Finite Element Analysis Software (Mechanical APDL or Workbench) preferred.
    • Experience in DOE or commercial nuclear facilities, particularly in equipment design analysis preferred.
    • Understanding of equipment design; specifically structural, thermal and dynamic (e.g. seismic modal and response spectra) analyses preferred.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • US Citizenship Required.
