Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     • Provide effective technical leadership and guidance, continually reviewing and evaluating current knowledge and emerging issues in biostatistics, and in the epidemiology and genetics of common, complex diseases.
    • Prepare solicitations of grant applications and contract proposals, establish clear objectives and evaluation criteria, conduct complex technical negotiations and make recommendations regarding funding decisions.
    • Analyze, interpret, and evaluate data from a medical and scientific viewpoint in an accurate and timely manner, identifying public health implications and making appropriate recommendations.
    • Review manuscripts containing epidemiologic, genetic, clinical, and prevention study data and other material for epidemiologic and methodologic content in a timely manner preparatory to publication.
    • Provide scientific and administrative advice to investigators, institutions, and laboratories to develop research applications in line with NHGRI/NIH guidelines.
    • Evaluate applications for all mechanisms of grant support in assigned areas in a timely manner and makes recommendations with regard to funding actions, providing timely advice and guidance by drawing upon extensive experience.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify for an Epidemiologist, GS-0601 position, you must have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    In addition, to qualify for an Epidemiologist, GS-0601 position at the GS-14 level, you must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: plans and conducts epidemiological studies and clinical trials with a focus on genetics; identifies inadequacies and inconsistencies in genetic data obtained from studies and clinical trials; consults and provides advice to senior management on the interpretation and findings from epidemiologic studies with a focus on genetics; and oversees and monitors epidemiologic research grant awards and reviews funding actions on epidemiologic studies for completion and accuracy.
