Epidemiologist monitors and investigates known or suspected sources and transmission of communicable diseases. Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     This is a unique opportunity to bring your skills and talents to the Safety & Health Assessment & Research for Prevention (SHARP) program here at the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) as an Epidemiologist 1. 
     
    The individuals in these entry-level positions will conduct investigations of work-related injury and illness under the supervision of a senior epidemiologist within the occupational epidemiology core team. They will provide epidemiology support, such as data collection, statistical analyses, identification and evaluation of new surveillance systems, to the fatal and non-fatal injury surveillance systems and the agency-wide ergonomics rulemaking initiative.
     
    The individuals in these positions may also be involved in other epidemiologic project including development and design of health surveys, on-site data collection tools for exposure and outbreak investigations, conduct ad hoc analyses of data, participate in the development and validation of occupational injury and illness case definitions, and the writing and publication of epidemiologic studies.
     
    This position will contribute to the overall mission of keeping workers safe by identifying trends and patterns in occupational health surveillance data that will allow identification of acute work-injury hazards and develop prevention recommendations.

    Some of what you’ll do:

    • Conduct studies to identify incidence and common causes of work-related injuries.
    • Compile and maintain data on acute work-related injuries.
    • Prepare administrative data for analyses.
    • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
    • Lead writing, or contribute to case investigation reports and trade journal articles.
    • Identify and evaluate new sources of surveillance data for work-related injuries.
    • Work with lead surveillance epidemiologist to publish required occupational health indicators report annually.

    Required:

    Knowledge of:

    • Modern epidemiologic principles and practices including the symptoms, causes, means of transmission and methods of control of injuries and diseases;
    • Relative strengths and weaknesses of common epidemiological study designs;
    • Strategies to minimize bias and confounding;
    • Social determinants of health;
    • Biostatistical methodology;
    • Computers and programming in database management and statistical software;
    • Community organizations and resources related to the field of public health and epidemiology.
    Skills in:

    • Database management and statistical analysis with programming languages such as SAS, R, SQL or Stata.
    Ability to:

    • Calculate and interpret measures of burden (e.g. ratios, proportions, incidence or prevalence rates);
    • Calculate and interpret summary statistics and associated measures of precision;
    • Calculate and interpret results from significance tests and regression modeling;
    • Communicate clearly and concisely orally, and in writing on scientific methods and results for technical and non-technical audiences;
    • Apply laws and departmental rules and regulations to problems of disease control;
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with governmental, voluntary, and private organizations, and groups concerned with public health services;
    AND
     
    A Master’s degree in public health including 12 graduate quarter hours of coursework in biostatistics and 12 graduate quarter hours in epidemiology, AND at least one (1) year of public health research experience with research demonstrating biostatistical techniques such as correlation/regression techniques.
     
    OR
     
    Bachelor’s degree in public health with concentration in epidemiology AND at least three (3) years of public health research experience with research demonstrating biostatical techniques such as correlation/regression techniques.
     
    OR
     
    Equivalent job experience will substitute year for year for education. Demonstrated job experience of the knowledge, skills and abilities qualifications listed above.
     
    Desired: 

    • Public health coursework or experience in occupational health surveillance and/or research.
