Epidemiologist monitors and investigates known or suspected sources and transmission of communicable diseases. Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. The Epidemiologist will design epidemiological studies of health problems with a focus on lower Alabama, organize and direct the staff and student workforce in carrying out these studies, compile and analyze results, and prepare reports for health centers, public health authorities, as well as the general public. Additionally, will participate in the education of medical students and residents
Supervisory Responsibilities:
•Hires staff members, directs and evaluates their job performances and provides training and guidance.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Proposes and designs research projects in epidemiology using both environmental and community studies.• Defines and identifies population groups for study and evaluation of risk from various environmental dangers.• Analyzes results and supervises the preparation of research project reports.• Writes proposals for future research projects and prepares requests for project funding.• Prepares reports to be presented to other scientific research facilities and to government administrators.• Gives educational talks to community groups.• Acts as a consultant to other scientists in the department and in the larger scientific community.• Provides educational resources as well as direct educational contact with pre-medical and medical students
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Knowledge of the design and administration of epidemiological research.• Analytical, organizational, and leadership skills for staff supervision and direction.• Excellent verbal and written skills to prepare reports and proposals and presenting information to outside scientific and community groups.
Education and Experience:
• A Ph.D. degree in epidemiology, public health, medicine, or a related field.
