Environmental, Health and Safety Director oversees organizational compliance with local, state and federal environment, health and safety regulations.     Department Summary
    Resilience, Emergency Management and Safety (REMS) provides strategic leadership over the university’s business continuity, campus safety, emergency management, environmental health and safety and parking portfolio. The department collaborates with key stakeholders to build organizational and individual resilience to adverse events, business disruptions, emergencies, hazardous environmental conditions, public safety incidents and safety risks.
    Campus Safety leads the university’s parking and public safety programs, and related services. In Klamath Falls, Campus Safety conducts preventative patrols, responds to incidents and service requests, engages in community-oriented problem-solving and enforces laws, rules and regulations. Campus Safety routinely engages all campuses in community awareness and outreach activities using crime prevention assessments, crime analysis and reporting, event tabling, group training sessions and similar functions.
    In conjunction with its campus and community partners, Business Continuity and Emergency Management provides plans and procedures; conducts training, drills and exercises; and offers resources to support campus-wide readiness against all-hazards and threats. Through awareness programs, consultation services, inspections, training and written guidance Environmental Health and Safety continuously shapes a sustainable culture of regulatory compliance, risk mitigation and safety.

    Position Summary
    The Assistant Director – Environmental Health and Safety is a key leadership position within Resilience, Emergency Management and Safety (REMS). It assists in leading and overseeing the university’s environmental health and safety portfolio with specific responsibility for biological, chemical/laboratory, laser and radiological compliance and safety programs. The Assistant Director – Environmental Health and Safety collaborates with stakeholders to develop a sustainable culture of regulatory compliance, resilience, risk mitigation and safety.

    The Assistant Director – Environmental Health and Safety manages assigned budgets, personnel and resources. This position is responsible for conducting strategic planning, developing programs and services, and advancing the concept of organizational resilience throughout the university. The position is accountable for all related programs and services across the university to include the Klamath Falls, Portland-Metro and Scappoose campuses. This position serves on the University’s Radiation Safety Committee and the Safety Commission.

    • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in health/medical physics, industrial hygiene, nuclear engineering, occupational safety and health, physical sciences or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.


    • Two (2) years professional experience in an environmental health and safety position with responsibility for one or more of the following specialized areas: biological, chemical/laboratory, laser and/or radiological compliance and safety programs.

    • Ability to effectively and respectfully work, communicate, and collaborate in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings

    • Ability and willingness to respond to incidents after hours, and work extended hours on site, under difficult and trying circumstances and willingness to maintain 24-hour availability via a wireless device capable of voice and data communications.

    • Ability to prepare professional reports and develop program materials and plans

    • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as databases and specialized programs


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree with an emphasis in health/medical physics, industrial hygiene, nuclear engineering, occupational safety and health, physical sciences or related field preferred.


    • Prior certification, training and experience in biological safety, chemical/lab safety, laser safety and/or radiation safety preferred.

    • Supervisory experience within a related environmental health and safety field preferred.

    • Certified Safety Manager (CSM) and/or National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification preferred.

    Completion of a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) certification and training course preferred. Candidates not possessing such must meet this requirement within 12-months of hire, paid for by the university.
    • Completion of certification and training pursuant to the requirements of 49 CFR 172.704(a) and (b) relating to the shipping of radioactive materials preferred. Candidates not possessing such must meet this requirement within 12-months of hire.
