Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Supervisor supervises engineers who develop, implement and maintain company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations. Involved in the design and development of facilities, work areas and work procedures and makes environmental, health and safety recommendations accordingly. Being an Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the preparation, maintenance, and updating of environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Additionally, Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Supervisor requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be an Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Supervisor A - ENVIRONMENTALIST FOOD SAFETY (Health Services)

  • Position Summary
    Performs supervisory responsibilities of assigned staff to conduct promotional, instructional, and inspectional duties relative to environmental health and community sanitation in one or more of the following areas: food establishments, swimming pools, tattoo and body piercing, temporary food permits, food vendor trucks, day care centers, personal care homes, institutional dietary areas, hotel and motels, environmental complaints, food borne illness inspections, etc.

    Pay Grade: 51
    Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education Minimum Qualifications
    100.00% - 1. Three (3) years of lead or supervisory experience in environmental health; and

    2. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor"s degree in physical science, biology, chemistry, sanitary sciences, environmental health, natural sciences, or closely related field; OR

    3. An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

    4. Credential or certification from NEHA or associated environmental public health related field strongly preferred.

    5. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Monitors the progress of assigned staff to ensure assigned inspections are conducted in accordance with established procedures and in compliance with existing state and local laws.

    2. Enforces laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety by conducting inspections at assigned permitted establishments.

    3. Evaluates and reviews staff productivity and activities to ensure quality control and that all inspections in assigned geographical areas of Shelby County are conducted in a timely manner.

    4. Assures a competent work force by training staff on new laws, procedures.

    5. Links assigned staff to training sites by assigning monthly FDA training modules to complete.

    6. Develops schedules for coverage of temporary event food inspections and mobile food truck vendors to ensure compliance with regulations.

    7. Evaluates construction plans to diagnose potential hazards associated with improper set-ups for new establishments.

    8. Investigates complaints and food borne illness complaints.

    9. Informs and educates establishment operators by conducting environmental safety classes each month.

    10. Performs other duties as assigned or directed. KSA's
    KSAs - 1. Knowledge of the principles of chemistry, biology and other natural sciences as applied to environmental health.

    2. Knowledge of existing laws and regulations pertaining to all areas of specialty in the Environmental Sanitation Section.

    3. Knowledge of policy codes and ordinances related to the area of specialization.

    4. Knowledge of the modern methods, principles, techniques and practices used in inspecting permitted establishments.

    5. Ability to interpret laws, policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health.

    6. Ability to supervise an assigned staff of environmentalists in performing a wide range of assigned inspection duties.

    7. Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

    8. Ability to train coordinate, review and evaluate the activities of assigned environmentalists.

    9. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    10. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel or similar computer software. Physical Requirements
    1. Work requires some stooping, bending, or climbing.
    2. Must be able to work in all types of weather. Special Requirements
    1. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver license or secure one upon date of employment.

    2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.

    3. Work will require travel to meetings, training, and activities after regular business hours.

    4. Must be able to work a modified schedule as necessary, which may include some after hours and weekends.

    5. Ability to complete FDA-ORA-U Web-based Pre and Post Food Safety Courses within 6 months of hire date. Disclaimer
