Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager plans, develops and manages company policies for adhering to local, state and federal environment, health and safety regulations. Designs and develops facilities, work areas and work procedures. Being an Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager directs preparation, maintenance, and updating of environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Additionally, Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager ensures projects are completed on time and within budget. Acts as advisor to environmental, health, and safety engineering team regarding projects, tasks, and operations. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a unit/department head. The Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.   • Summary:


    The Manager of Environmental Health and Safety provides oversight and coordination of employee safety and general safety programs that ensures a safe work environment for all employees and a safe atmosphere for guests. This position will set safety standards and compliance based on legal and industry specific requirements. Additionally, they will continually monitor working conditions and seek to resolve any safety issues that may arise. This position will report to the Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration & CFO.


    Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions (include but not limited to):


    • Evaluate and assess various sites on campus to identify potential safety hazards, including such things as fall hazards, confined spaces, air quality, etc.
    • Assist with the development of safety policies for approval and recommendations to improve health and safety for employees and guests.
    • Assist in the implementation and compliance of required federal, state, and local statutes and standards relating to both guest and employee safety.
    • Work with staff on hazard identification and reporting, including unsafe work practices, inclusion of safety specific details in written reports.
    • Works directly with the Safety/Security Supervisor and the Human Resources to prepare and evaluate health and safety guidelines in order to minimize accidents, injuries, or other damage.
    • Facilitate safety training for all employees and volunteers in coordination with the Safety and Security Supervisor.
    • This position is a member of the zoo Safety Committee and will coordinate onsite safety meetings with the Security and Safety Supervisor.
    • Promote proactive and preventative safety activities by observing, analyzing, and encouraging safe work behavior and correcting unsafe conditions.
    • Seeks advice and guidance from our safety consultant(s), liability and workers compensation risk manager(s) regulatory agencies as needed to ensure that the workplace is compliant with health, safety and environmental regulations.
    • Is part of an accident investigation team with Security and Human Resources , to thoroughly investigate incidents/injuries involving guest, employees and/or damage zoo property.
    • Document training, meetings, and investigations.
    • Perform administrative tasks in support of the general purpose of the organization to include submission of a Risk Analysis on individual events as well as quarterly and annual reporting of trends.
    • Perform other tasks as assigned.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Degree in Safety or related field.
    • Ability to work well in a team environment.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.
    • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and odd hours as needed.
    • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
    • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands:


    • This position will work primarily in an office environment and outside. Significant exposure to weather is possible.
    • Work is normally performed in a seasonal outside work environment.
    • Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
    • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
    • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds.
    • Understand and respond to a diverse population.
